Hm, life starts out quite well when you're 35, and not just because [livejournal.com profile] honorh wrote an incredibly sweet post. She and [livejournal.com profile] kathyh are my oldest online friends, and I can't believe it's been eight years since we started writing to each other. I was really lucky with the friends I've made via the net; they continue to enrich my life, both old and newer ones. Since these friendships usually start via shared interests, and since we're spread all over the world, making a RL party impossible, I decided to nominate some parties in various TV shows, movies and books as ones I think we all would have had fun attending, and to fondly reminesce about them. In no particular order:

Babylon 5: the Centauri celebration of life from Parliament of Dreams. They might have appalling political views and their very own idea about hair styles, but when it comes to parties and enjoying themselves, no one in the B5'verse can beat the Centauri. Mind you, in retrospect Londo stealing the funniest scene of what is G'Kar's first big episode (since the ep in question is really about the Narn) is bittersweet, because JMS, cruel genius at large, uses it in the montage of Londo remembering in The Fall of Centauri Prime, but the Centauri party is still great fun to watch. And who wouldn't want to have lovable Vir and Londo in high spirits as their hosts? (Also: in purple, he is stunning.)

ST: Deep Space Nine: Jadzia's bachelor party, no question. Why Bashir, O'Brien and Sisko were idiotic enough to think Worf's bachelor party was the better bet I don't know. If you ask me, they deserved the Klingon torture they were getting. Meanwhile, Jadzia's guests are having the time of their lives with crazy dancing (price goes to Nog for most original one), oggling scantily clad male fireball jongleurs and enjoying great fun and drinks. Oh, and Jadzia squaring off against her future mother-in-law. (Note how they all close ranks behind our Dax.) I'm there!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: None of Buffy's birthday parties, that's a given. I want us to survive, after all, and if possible without getting our hearts broken in the process. However, that Thanksgiving thing looked nice. Well, not so much for Xander with the Syphilis, but by the end of the day, all illnesses were healed, and they were all starting to relax and enjoy the food, even Spike. Or, wait, I know: Halloween at the Magic Shop! Great costumes, candy, and we'd be making Giles and Anya richer!

Angel the Series: That would be Cordy's party from She (the overwise undisputed low light of season 1). This one has: Cordy balancing the new found hero gig with her old social ways in a great balance, and still full of acerbic one liners, Wesley still in shy and dorky mood, desperately eager to please and desperately looking for company (I'm over here, Wes!), Angel wisely not dancing (though hilarously imagining himself to) and otherwise displaying deadpan humour and downright niceness. The rest of the guest look as if they're heaving a great time, and provide additional eye candy, being mostly show biz folk. Also: if we want some quiet time away from the party buzz, there is always Phantom Dennis to talk to in the kitchen!

Star Wars: Not the Triumph of the Will choreographed medal award ceremony at the end of A New Hope, let me tell you that. No. I'm going either with the big celebration at the end of Return of the Jedi (though considering that some of the Ewok dishes might consist of roasted Stormtrooper, I might think twice about that), or with the one on Naboo at the end of The Phantom Menace. True, in terms of storytelling, it's a dark irony moment, as Palpatine has won and they celebrate essentially the start of their doom. Otherwise, though, there are a lot of attractions: the architecture and dresses on Naboo are both gorgeous and a feast for the eyes, and since it reminds me of Italy (where some of the stuff was filmed), I'm assuming the cuisine will as well.

Farscape: The most touching occasion was undoubtedly Chiana's little party in Family Ties, but that wasn't something you could invite lots of people to. So I'm going with that infamous night out in Scratch 'n Sniff. Keep away from that perfume stuff, and enjoy all the rest - Chiana's acrobatics and barely subtexty dance with Jool, D'Argo dancing even worse than Angel and having a blast doing so, and John somehow ending up in those garters. Yay!

Firefly: I'm torn. Hearing Hero of Kanton performed live while Our Heros stare in disbelieve in Jaynetown does appeal, but I think all the mud outside would be a horrible burden on my laundry. So I'm rather going with the party from Our Mrs Reynolds. Presents all around, dancing, and Mal getting married to Saffron.*g*

Lord of the Rings: No question about it. Keep your Rivendell festivities, your Gondor victory celebration. I'm taking my friends to Bilbo's and Frodo's birthday party (which reminds me, that birthday was recently, too). Great food, dancing, fireworks, and a most memorable speech...

In other news, the Lorsley, aka the Werne, aka the Wesley 'n Lorne story I posted a while ago is beta'd and up here and here. I also wrote a new Babylon 5 drabble for the new challenge over at [livejournal.com profile] thefiringline, "Burial Rights".

And speaking of B5, [livejournal.com profile] natoth created a great drawing as a birthday present for yours truly, showing Senna, the girl Vir ends up with in the Centauri trilogy. For non-readers, she's also the young Centauri woman in charge of the children whom Londo tells the story to in In the Beginning.

Lastly, look here:

They nominated me for two stories, City Girls and Ouroborous, and I'm one happy fanfic writer.

Thank you - and I'm so glad you made it back online, after the hurricane horrors!

Great parties! I haven't seen the DS9 one yet, although it sounds fun, so I think I'll swing by the B5 party. I'll drink a l'chayim in your honour with Ivanova, who wishes you the best, and I'll see if I can get Lennier and Delenn to take some time out from their serious duties to wish you well over Kool-aid.

Looks like you're having great fun with Londo over there, I'd better not interfere. Have a great birthday!

It better be Kool-aid, considering I now know what happens when Lennier gets plied with Synthehol.*g*

(Ah, so that's how you spell l'chayim - I have only heard it out loud so far, during my one visit to Israel years ago, and on the soundtrack of Fiddler on the Roof, of course.)

You pick the best parties. I'm going to drop in on the LOTR party because ever since I first read the book I've always wanted to see Gandalf's fireworks. I think I made an audible squeak of pleasure when I finally did in the film.

Are you going to emulate my other half and spread your birthday celebrations over a whole week? Then you could go to all these parties, as packing them in in one night might be a bit much!

Has it really been 8 years!

It's incredible, isn't it? Tempus fugit, etc.

No, not through the entire week, I can't. I just felt like spreading a little more party joy after all the beautiful presents. And it was more fun to post about than to sigh about yet more kerfuffles.

I knew you'd pick Bilbo's party.*g* But be careful not to drink too much of the Gaffer's own brew...

Don't worry, I don't like beer! I'm sure Bilbo keeps a well-stocked cellar which will provide me with something more to my taste *g*.

Happy Birthday!

Happy Belated Birthday!

Very good party choices there, it's toudh to decide where to go. Ah, hell I'll visit them all, at least then I won't go hungry. :)

Congratulations on the fanfic nominations too, although the link seems to be missing.

Thank you

Huh, all I see between "look here" and the last sentence is a big white space. Maybe it's my computer. *shrug*
