A few glimpses at Hamburg, where I was yesterday. Usually when I'm in Hamburg it's cloudy and/or the wind is determined to destroy my umbrella, but yesterday, behold:

(The harbor, obviously, with two of the domes they built in order to stage musicals in the background.)

My day started with a long walk on the side of the Elbe, covering St. Pauli and Altona. On such a day, wouldn't you?

Hamburg: reliably where they still have political graffiti. The first one says "no human being is illegal", the second compares Hamburg to Lampedusa.

Also to be found there: a WWII era U-Boot, which is a museum these days:

Most of Hamburg was destroyed in WWII and had to be rebuild, but here's a sight that probably was similar through the centuries:

Hamburg supposedly has more bridges than Venice and Amsterdam put together. I couldn't swear to it, but they do have a lot.

Many of them in the old storage houses area.

According to Wikipedia, that's a 1970s USSR submarine painted as a German U-Boat.

I suspect the claim to record bridge numbers may in part be due to differences in counting. Because the high numbers for Hamburg (of about 2500 bridges) count afaik bridges on footpaths etc. as well as bigger bridges, whereas other methods count only bridges for streets and railways. I mean, either way there are a lot of bridges here (side effect of being formerly a swampy river delta that thankfully our ancestors criss-crossed with drainage to make it livable and malaria free), but for example when you look at bridge statistic websites NYC still beats Hamburg by hundreds with 2891 bridges, though NYC is much bigger of course, so not that surprising.
