Elementary 5.03
Oct. 24th, 2016 04:43 pmIn which Sherlock's affection for Gregson is given a heartwarming outing, he turns out to share Norma Bates' way of thinking on at least one issue, and we get continuity on Joan's Mafia geekness, but the true question of the hour is: did Joan just hint she'd be okay with a Sherlock/Marcus/Joan threesome?
Kidding, though I believe this Holmes/Watson exchange:
S: Marcus requests our presence at a nudist resort.
J: Huh. *pause* This is about a case - isn't it?
Was the writers teasing the fans a bit. Anyway, case of the week was case of the week-ly, while the return of Gregson's girlfriend Paige who needed Sherlock's help (cheers for any private consulting!) due to a suspicion she had set a subplot in motion in which Sherlock, due to shipping Gregson/Happiness, becomes the world's most unlikely Yenta, with the very Holmesian rationale that this will solve Paige's financial caused by US healthcare system problems. "Gaming the insurance industry is what marriage is for, right?" This of course made me think of Norma Bates proposing to Alex Romero using the same rationale in season 4 of Bates Motel. Sherlock's way of thinking resembling that of a member of the Bates family isn't as out of there as it sounds, come to consider his psyche and family history...
No Shinwell this week, but the return of Joan's childhood fandom having been mobsters, and Sherlock teasing her a bit about her childhood, which makes me hope we'll learn more about it this season. Also, Aidan Quinn gets to do a couple of truly wonderful reaction shots when Gregson is faced with Sherlock at his twitchiest.

Date: 2016-10-24 08:17 pm (UTC)Joan's remembered mafia geekiness was the best, as was Sherlock's violin playing. And Sherlock putting his principles in second place to, as you put it, shipping Gregson/happiness was heartwarming indeed.
