I have never cried over the result of an election before, and I've witnessed some depressing ones in my lifetime. I can't stop crying now. Have yet to throw up, though I've been feeling like it for hours.

Well, we were warned not to install windows, but did we listen? No. Now it's full of ~phobic malware, and the antivirus protection doesn't work half as well as we thought.

This is such an awful outcome, I really thought we had this one. I watched Brexit happen knowing that nativism and hate ignorance could outweigh the optimism of a vibrant and diverse nation but I really thought we weren't going to let it.

I feel like Cordelia in the Wishverse. While being aware my own throat is safe, for now, it's yours and all my other US friends that are in danger of being drained now.

Thanks -- I'm fairly privileged as a straight white able bodied person with relative job security, but I'm very worried for my friends who are disabled and otherwise vulnerable to losing their health care, racial and religious minorities, immigrants, LGBT people, etc. A lot of us are looking for places to put our energy in the coming weeks and months (let's be real, dammit, years) and it helps to know we have support.

I'm not usually a political crier - but I teared up around 11 pm, as it started to sink in that the dream of a female president was lost for now. I just - I wanted that, so much.

The "first female" part of the equation doesn't have quite the same emotional impact for me, because other countries closer to my neigbourhood already went there, and my own, of course, currently has our first female head of government. (And of the current governments in Europe, she's the longest serving one right now.) But what cuts to the bone, even from a transatlantic distance, is how the vilest, most open misogyny was rewarded in this election. And not just by male voters, but also by women. A Trump victory would have made me furious and desperate regardless, but as now numbers show a sizable portion of female voters helped get him there - that makes me cry all over again.

The UK has had two female PMs and they were/are both right-wing assholes. So same. I did appreciate how Merkel worded her congratulations message.

Re: congratulations message, same here. You know, I've never voted for Merkel - she's a conservative, I'm not - but as of August 2015, she truly became my chancellor. Doesn't mean I agree with all she does now, but I'm rooting for her more often than not, plus right now she seems like the lone bastion of sanity and at least some sense of compassion left as far as leaders of the Western world are concerned.

(My first "go, Angela!" Moment happened years before the refugee crisis, though, when she was present at the Frankfurt Book Fair when China - represented by the Chinese President - was the guest of honor and in her welcoming speech managed to stay diplomatic AND deliver a sound critique of the Chinese behavior towards, well, everyone who disagrees. She simply talked about her childhood and youth in the GDR, and how important forbidden books were, how writers were treated etc. - all logical subjects when opening a Book Fair, and she never had to point out the obvious parallel for everyone present to get it.)

I didn't cry until I read the text of her concession in my email (I'm a contributor and volunteer). This is so hard and so unexpected.

That was a beautiful speech which she never should have had to make. And just now I made the mistake of reading Maureen Dowd's gloating and am furious all over again.
