I've always that that the retelling and changing of myths through the ages is the earliest form of fanfiction. Reversely, it's always intriguing to see a fanfic author tackle a myth, and not via tackling a film or book incarnation. I just found a story tackling that other triangle of Arthurian lore, Guinevre/Morgan/Arthur, and it's very good:

"Watching"

****

I'm now in the possession of the fifth season of Babylon 5 on DVD. And yes, I couldn't resist plugging in The Fall of Centauri Prime to hear JMS' commentary. Which is good (and hey, always nice to find one's own interpretations being backed up by the show's creator), but now I'm all crushed and an emotional wreck again. Excuse me while a sob.

*seufz*

Oh cool! Will have to bookmark that.

Btw, have you read Elizabeth Wein's Winter Prince? It's a sort of Morgause/Morgan/Arthur's son triangle thing, which actually has nothing to do with your post, but I thought of it anyway. Heh, sorry.

Yes, I've read it ages ago, and admired it quite a lot.

for some reason this story reminded me that when I first read King Lear, I daydreamed about Edmund/Cordelia love. 'Cause that would be hot (this icon suddenly seeming more appropriate than ever).

anyway, thanks for the link! I enjoyed the story and am passing it on to some Arthur-junkies on my flist.

It surely would be interesting. Never mind his backstory with her sisters, he so would... but could she?

I should clarify -- I was thinking of Cordy & Edmund having a backstory, before the play started. I guess they probably couldn't really do it, b/c she'd have to stay virginal for the marriage market. but possible tortured love and unresolved sexual tension. I just always liked the idea of staging the play with the Gloucester boys both eyeing C in the opening scene, and Cordy's defiance serving as a catalyst for Edmund's rebellion.

Ohhhhh.... yes, makes perfect psychological sense. And of course Edmund as a bastard was utterly and completly out of the question as a marriage candidate.

right, even Edgar would be out of the question since his dad was just an earl. and he'd be sad but philosophical about it, write her a lot of dreadful "doubt thou the stars are fire" type poetry, which she'd listen too politely, then sneak off behind the stairs with Edmund and drink illicit mead while the Fool entertained them with impressions of Old Gloucester and Lear. Because, for real? I love both those boys to distraction but Edgar is William, and Edmund is Spike. There's no competition.

Damn, now I have to write this.

Really, Cordelia/Edmund is pure Padme Amidala and young Anakin.

C: As you know, I must marry a Duke or a King.
E: There are more ways than one to marry a king.

Yes, you must. It sounds just like a terrific story.

This makes for great angst on her part once she finds out that he's leading the British army against her and Dad!

Yes!

I do believe this will be happening soon. I can probably even pass it off as schoolwork and smuggle it into my thesis.

now I just have to reread the play and remind myself what actually happens after act one. . .
