Look who's back
Dec. 12th, 2017 07:40 pmNew Jessica Jones season 2 trailer:
Speculation: the trailer seems to indicate s2's major storyline will be Jessica vs whoever is responsible for her (and presumably other people) having superpowers. This, as opposed to the Kilgrave storyline from s1, is as far as I recall not inspired by something from the Alias comics, as Jessica's powers really were an accident, in classic superhero fashion. But various Marvel tv shows have hinted at some big murky conspiracy of the experimenting-with-humans type. (See also: Luke Cage, with Luke's backstory and that of his wife Reva, which of course ties directly into Jessica Jones; the reason why Kilgrave had sicced Jessica on Reva to begin with was that she (Reva) had that recording of pre-Kilgrave Kevin being experimented on.)
As long as no ninja shows up in the company of whoever is behind the conspiracy, we're good, and I don't think there's a danger here, after all, the whole point of the s1 subplot (which otherwise felt like an unnecessary filler) about Simpson going villain was presumably to set up IGH as Jessica's future post-Kilgrave nemesis.
Meanwhile, for all my bickering about ninjas (in Daredevil), watching the trailer reminded me again how much I had enjoyed the Jessica and Matt interactions in The Defenders, so I checked what new fanfiction was around, and lo:
The Killing Game: in which Jessica has the bad luck of having to team up with Matt and Frank "The Punisher" Castle, when they happen to run into each other and the aliens from The Predator series at the same time. (I haven't watched any Predator movies, so if you haven't, either, don't worry.) The aliens mainly have the point of providing our three main characters with a really good reason to cooperate in order to survive. Very entertaining dynamics between all three people involved ensue, along with solid action.
Just a phone call away (order ahead): from the same author, a post Defenders tale in which Jessica still really does not want to be part of a team, but somehow finds herself unable to resist teaming up with these guys anyway. Again, excellent and entertaining characterisation all around.

Maguire!Peter: is an either/or extremist who thinks giving up superheroing (mid second movie) also means you have to ignore people getting mugged (what's wrong about calling the police, if you don't want to get involved physically).
Garfield!Peter: responds really badly to prospect of girlfriend studying in Oxford; after doing well in his first movie by not stupidly lying to love interest, thereby creating angst, does terrible in second movie by stupidly lying to love interest.
Holland!Peter: most functional Peter so far, but then, is also the youngest. Does take the whole "I want to impress Tony Stark" thing to really dangerous (to him) extremes, but has moved on from this by end of first movie.
Miles Morales: I've only read one comic with him so far, so don't feel qualified to judge.
I mean, none of them ever reaches Frank Castle regions of dysfunctional coping skills, no question about it, or even Jessica Jones regions.
What I'd like to know: Jessica in the trailer quotes the "with great power comes great responsibility" line followed up with a threat to punch an unseen person if they say it to her. Now, Jessica can't be referencing pop culture knowledge of Spider-man the way you or I would because as of Captain America: Civil War, and the reaquisition of the Spidey rights, Peter Parker officially exists in the rest of the MCU. Which means Jessica can only know him as a person, not as a comic book/movie character. Now, in the comics, Jessica actually went to the same high school as Peter (and had a bit of a crush on him which he never noticed), but obviously, given their respective ages in their current incarnations, that backstory is out. So - how does she know that line of Uncle Ben's?
