Last year due to my New Zealand trip I couldn't watch the second half of s5 as it was broadcast, but I recently caught up when Netflix put it on, so I could start the new season all informed.

When the last season finished with that tag scene, I automatically thought "brain tumor" (and apparantly so did Sherlock), but no, the writers correctly figured out what's far more scary to our hero is the prospect of living with handicaps that make it difficult or impossible to do his work, with the added fear that this in turn could trigger a drug relapse. I'm really glad the show didn't let him hide this from Watson anymore because otherwise I would have screamed gratitious angst inducing ooc behavior, given, well, their relationship the last five seasons. So instead we get some good partners and being there for each other scenes, and may I say: great acting all around, from the wry "my personality hasn't changed, Watson" when she hugs him to the much later freak out as the double horror of loss of mind control and relapse as a prospect really hits home for him. Joan the professional coming up with possible additional therapies is so very her.

Incidentally: it occurs to me that in tv shows and action movies, heroes go through so much which in rl should have resulted in any type of long term injuries, but is handwavd by luck of hero even if he/she does not have physical superpowers, so Elementary actually letting being kicked on the head when you're lying down have consequences is a rarity.

Case of the week: knew it had to be the husband when the buy-out was mentioned. Is "Eskimo sisters" a real life phrase? If so, go figure Sherlock would have known about it.

Michael the grave digging apparant serial killer befriending Sherlock under the guise of fellow recovering addict: I swear, at this rate Sherlock is not going to befriend anyone ever again, given last season's experience with Shinwell, and a few season's back Oscar kidnapping his original sponsor and putting him through hell. Am not sure about this storyline, not least due to the possible repetitiveness, because come on, between Moriarty and Morland, we've got the affinity to supervillains covered.
