Tonight...

Friends, Americans, People Across The Sea, lend me your ear: tonight you shall watch Battlestar Galactica. Trust me. Do this. It's a classy, well-written, well-performend show with moral dilemmas, cool characters, and NO ROBOTDOGS. You've heard me babble about its virtues before, you will hear me again, and conversation is ever so much better than monologue. Also, I would just love to read [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge and [livejournal.com profile] kakodaimon on Cylon monotheism versus human polytheism, or [livejournal.com profile] penknife and [livejournal.com profile] artaxastra tackle this version of Adama and Moore's best original contribution, the fabulous President, Laura Roslin (actually, I'd like to read Deborah tackling her, too, with her thing for mature female politicians). [livejournal.com profile] karabair could do such great stuff with Apollo and Starbuck. And [livejournal.com profile] sabine101, if we ever get her back permanently, unhounded by RL woes, could do wonders with Baltar and Six. Watch, I beg you. Support from the beginning.

Here is an introduction with pictures and shorthand descriptions of characters and relationships.

This is Andraste's reaction to the miniseries preceding the show, and here is Melymbrosia's somewhat more critical, but still positive review of same. (As the three of us are love the same aspect best, I'm looking forward to further reviews from them.)

****
Speaking of Andraste, she also wrote some
cool Babylon 5 meta here. On the significance of Centauri, Narn and Minbari using ancient weapons, specifically.

I warmly second [livejournal.com profile] selenak's request. It really is a very good show indeed.

I don't own a t.v., but I will ask a friend to record it for me.

Thanks for the recommendation!

I will watch Battlestar Galactica exactly one month from now, during reading week, and at any rate try to write vaguely interesting commentary. Gramercy for recommending it.

Also, I am mostly visiting to apologise for Bester slowness. Real Life has become incredibly intrusive and rather scary. When things normalise or approach (relative) normality I'll return to it with a vengeance. Hopefully it's very short-term. I know how long you've waited for the plot.

evil!

trying to give me a new fandom and fic bunnies. . .

you are much evil-er than Gaius Baldar, because you have no moral conflict or remorse. and you're probably right!

my attempts to watch tonight may be foiled because my power is out. *just as I typed that? the power came on. weird!*

as far as the way fandom corrupts everything. . .I was rereading the last act of King Lear, noticing how Edmund tries to play up his own big death scene when everything is falling apart around him (and how do I love that Albany's reaction to the news of Edmund's death is basically "Who gives a shit?") anyway, that lovely bit of narcissism reminded me of Gaius' "what have I done?" during the "world blowing up" scene.

also, thanks for the Bab5 info. . .I don't remember which ep I saw, it was the first one on the DVDs, but I'll bookmark your recs for when I get the discs.

[livejournal.com profile] scruffywesley posted that one, this one, and a bunch of others from "Spin the Bottle" in her journal yesterday. I particularly love the throat cut/friends abandoned me/what's your excuse? because I feel like it precludes a lot of the explaining "WHO is this Wesley bloke?" to non-initiates on my f-list.

also, apropos of (almost) nothing, I just love Wesley's clothes in these caps; they're much nattier than his usual dark!Wes look, so it's like he dressed up to come ask Fred to the high school dance; so they work perfectly when he's head boy again.

I'm not evil, I just write that way.*g* Ah well, I might as well confess, since [livejournal.com profile] artaxastra has told me I'm her evil twin anyway.

I was rereading the last act of King Lear, noticing how Edmund tries to play up his own big death scene when everything is falling apart around him (and how do I love that Albany's reaction to the news of Edmund's death is basically "Who gives a shit?") anyway, that lovely bit of narcissism reminded me of Gaius' "what have I done?" during the "world blowing up" scene.

Good points all around, and yes, there is definitely a similarity.*g*

By the way....

You're welcome! -:)

I'm thrilled Moore's doing one! I used to read his posts on the AOL Star Trek forums voraciously during DS9's run and even asked a few questions which he answered.

Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll start an Ask Ron Moore section.

I wasn't online yet when DS9 was still on the air (though I was an avid fan, and first bought the videos, and then the DVDs, because I could not be without my other space station show).

And yes, here's hoping!

Hmm. If I start watching the new Battlestar Galactica, I'm going to feel like I have to watch the old one, too.

Not necessarily, though I shouldn't say this, since I have promised [livejournal.com profile] artaxastra to watch the old one as well if she watches the new one. So I will. (I only know the pilot and two eps from way back when, and was only moderately entertained and vaguely amused, but that was many years ago.) But you don't have to. I promise you you'll love the new one, though. Look up the basics about the pilot in any of those posts I linked to above, then watch tonight's first episode, I beseech thee!

I was pretty much too young for the original--it was what my brother was into when I was, I dunno, five?

It looks like I'll be watching it, because said brother ([livejournal.com profile] iralith) needs someone to tape it. He said he basically liked the recent miniseriesy thing.

I love your brother already. (He isn't underage, is he?) Hooray!

*g* He's cool. He's the smart one in the family...:)

Oh, and no, not underage. 29.

I watched the premiere episode tonight on the Space channel here in Canada. Whoah! gave me some serious chills. I watched the original show, and was a fan, in spite of the cheesiness. This new Battlestar Galactica is so much better, great characters, lots of moral ambiguity, and I love the strength of the women in this. Definitely gonna keep on watching this.
I'm also taping it for my friend [livejournal.com profile] masqthephlsphr, since she doesn't have cable. I'm sure she's going to enjoy it too.

I'm so glad you like it, and hope Masq will, too. And yes, amen to the strong women (who exist in tandem with strong male characters, thereby proving it's not necessary to tone down tone down either for the other to shine)!

Not meant as an attack...I have to disagree..

Having watched it I really dont think much of it... it lacks any essence of originality and has characters that are being acted almost completely generically in my opinion.

To each their own

I find it the best written and acted show sinced Firefly, but of course if you don't enjoy it, then it's better for you not to watch it.
