Day 11 - Crew Position You Would Want

Frankly, none. Just about the only one I‘d be sort of qualified for would be historian, and these only exist on Kirk‘s Enterprise in order to be seduced by charismatic fascists they fangirl, or, even worse, they‘ve already established a Third Reich Cosplay world, because sure, a historian would think that was a great idea the first time around.

(Gene Roddenberry had weird ideas about historians.)

Now, Jake Sisko, budding writer and aspiring journalist, is someone whose job I imagine I could do, but he‘s never part of Starfleet (except in a canonical AU), and I really like that about Jake. So: can‘t pick his occupations, either, for the purpose of this question.

It seems to be a thing about SF creators and history, given Straczynski's notorious attitudes as displayed in a certain notorious episode of Babylon 5. (According to him, he started doing a history course at university and was HORRIFIED and OUTRAGED when it was all about economics and large-scale social change, when he thought he'd be learning to write INSPIRING biographies of GREAT MEN.)

And then there's the historian who turned up in the one Big Finish Doctor Who drama I've heard, who was basically a female David Irving, but for Davros. (She found out that you should never meet your heroes.)

And Isaac Asimov's "psychohistory" as, basically, history as a way of learning lessons to manipulate entire cultures better.

I'm pretty sure there must be space historians on the second wave exploration ships that serve different sciences, and don't get into weird scrapes and battles all the time. But in the ST universe non-crew positions would be much better for writers and artists. I bet even with advanced computers there would be still a ton of holodeck scenario designers for example, to make that recreation feasible in the first place.

I'm not that fluent in ST canon detail.

The Enterprise-D had a literary historian for some unknown reason in "The Big Goodbye". Then again, given how often ships get thrown back to the 20th century, having someone onboard who can carry a conversation about pop culture while you're trying to blend in might not be a bad idea...
