January Meme: The Black Widow Movie
Jan. 3rd, 2020 09:08 amFirst of all, yes, we should have had the movie years ago. but as opposed to 99% of my flist/circle, I'm not in a stage of rage re: Natasha in Endgame, so I'm quite looking forward to it.
What I'm expecting: a solid adventure vaguely based on the comic storyline of Natasha confronting a younger product of the Red Room and thus her own past. She'll probably end up teaming up with younger self and defeat at least one of her former trainers. (Provided the movie sticks with the MCU take on Natasha as being Scarlet Johannsson's age, not someone of Steve's generation with an artificially prolonged life span as in the comics. There is, of course, the outside possibility that she'll find out her memories are wrong and that she's really much older than what she remembers, which is the kind of thing that frequently happens in the comics, but I doubt it, if only for the reason that the MCU stays away from non-aging superheroes so far (who always pose a problem when there's more than one movie, since actors age).
(Wolverine: not yet in the MCU.)
Given Dottie in Agent Carter was a highly memorable character proving you could write a Widow who's not like Natasha at all yet who's evidently the product of the same training, I'm hoping for the same re: younger self - Yelena if I remember correctly, and for their relationship to be key for the movie.
I tried to stay away from any spoilers, but one thing I did hear was that the movie will be set post Civil War, when Natasha is on the run. I very much hope this means no other Avengers. (Not because I'm not fond of them, but their story was told.) Or if they show up, then only in the briefest of cameos - say, a phonecall between Natasha and Steve. T'Challa, otoh, can show for a solid scene or two; not only did he have good chemistry with Natasha in Civil War, she also owes him something of an explanation for Leipzig.
What I'm also expecting: fake Russian accents, because that is still how most American movies roll. (Seriously, would that more of them would take the Death of Stalin option of letting all the actors speak in their regional English/American accents, since it's a given that they're supposed to talk in Russian to each other anyway, and there are regional accents in Russian, too.) Weird geography and weirder geographic politics. (Am still amused that in Civil War, Steve, Bucky and Sam start their getaway in Berlin and end up at the Leipizig airport, and that the German GSG9 is for some reason sent after Bucky in Romania, this despite the fact that what Bucky is currently wanted for happened in Austria, Romania has its own police and would create a diplomatic incident over something like this, and Bucky is an US national which meant there would be far more likely Americans after him.)
Lastly, am expecting those trademarks of MCU movies, banter and a good soundtrack. If they get a Russian musical advisor to choose something other than Tchaikowsky (for the inevitable ballet flashback), all the better because I've become acquainted with some music via movies which I otherwise would never have heard. But I must admit my inner silly Beatles fan hopes for some excuse for someone to play Back in the USSR just for kicks.

Date: 2020-01-04 05:54 am (UTC)Also, given that she went from SHIELD to throwing herself into her Avengers identity/friends, post Civil War when the Avengers are split, SHIELD is stll in remnants and in any case not an option anymore and there's a warrant on her makes sense to me as a point for her to confront where she came from originally before joining Steve & Co. She had seen first SHIELD and then the Avengers as a way to make up for that past, and now both turn out to be compromised (in different ways and to different degrees). Plus I suppose the movie might offer her the option to vanish into non-superhero life altogether and at the end, she decides not to do that.

Date: 2020-01-04 05:40 am (UTC)I hadn't thought of that, but that would make sense! After all, the MCU does legacy characters - (Antman, Wasp, and now also Sam as the second Captain America). Here's hoping!

Date: 2020-01-05 01:34 am (UTC)That would be amazing. If only.
I'm still really looking forward to meeting a bunch of people Natasha obviously calls family.

So much! Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet would be amazing - they could segue effortlessly between ballet and fight scenes!
