January Meme: My favourite conspiracy theory

Since the Roswell aliens story got exploded by the simple fact that the Orange Menace would never, ever, been able to keep it a secret, I'm going with "the lost Doctor Who episodes all exist on tape in Simbabwe. I don't know why in Simbabwe in particular - as opposed to other countries formerly colonized by the Brits - but I like it. Both because it would mean the episodes stll exist and because, if there is ever a non-bloodthirsty, non corrupt ruler, the citiizens of Simbabwe could sell those episodes to global DW fandom and get some money back into the country.

Not necessarily— you can still assume the Air Force decided this was a secret too sensitive to leave to the politicians.

How could I forget! Voltaire even worked tirelessly at rewriting Fritz‘ entire correspondance with just about everyone, all for Austrian gold!

Well, why do you think Fritz's French is so much better than his German? Fritz was an upstanding Prussian king! It was all part of Austrian propaganda to undermine his support among Germans by making him appear to be a Francophile. Those cunning Austrians...

Naturally! His writely vanity is the clue to give it all away. I mean, would someone really compare him to Homer, Sophocles, Virgil and just about very genius of the ancient world? Who does that, if not Voltaire himself? The Austrian conspiracy has been unmasked a long time ago, but gossipy sensationalists won't accept the truth. ;)

As I understand it, the BBC has already checked with every other overseas network that received copies of the original tapes, but due to political issues, the Zimbabwe government was - perhaps unsurprisingly - unwilling to let the BBC trawl through their entire government media archives... So if original tapes do still exist, Zimbabwe's basically the only place that hasn't been properly searched.

(Though, sadly, even if by some miracle the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation did keep its archives from when it was the Rhodesian state broadcaster, there are plenty of lost episodes that never aired outside the UK, and so are almost certainly gone for good...)
