In recent days, considerable space on lj has been devoted to the fact that one middleaged man in an overpaid and antiquated profession will marry the middle-aged woman he's been in love with for the last thirty or so years. Frankly, what Roz says. Especially about the "unholy alliance of bien-pensants and the Murdoch press - which, let it be remembered, has gone republican largely because Buckingham Palace refused to suck up to the ghastly Rupert".

Very pretty, indeed. Also, it's fascinating to see how many great and wonderful LJ-ers can be immediately recognized just because of their rather destinctive icon taste *g*

Oh, and btw, did you get my reply about the BSG episodes? If you still haven't heard anything from Hmpf, I could mail you the CDs monday. All I need to know is whether I should send them to B. or M.

Lj is playing crazy, obviously. I didn't get your reply. I'll leave B. on Tuesday morning to hit the (professional) road, though, so better sent them to M where I'll be on Saturday. And thank you!

Actually, I was beginning to wonder if the said engagement might be completely ignored by my friendslist... And now I'm wondering if there's some significance in the only person who has made any sort of mention not being from this kingdom...

I was about to reply with a very similar comment. I really don't think most of us give a toss. Well, the media do, obviously, but beyond that? What difference does it make to the lives of average Joe and Jane? Sod all.

I love the icon meme. So pretty.

[livejournal.com profile] paratti, [livejournal.com profile] artaxastra and [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 were quite upset about it. I'm of the right generation, I suppose, but felt like the only one who didn't bother to watch the Diana wedding as a teenager and wondered even then what the fuzz was about....

I have worked in Murdoch newspapers. It was a good experience. The guy's a genius, and he is a newspaper man - he can write a story and lay out a page.

"The Sun Talks To the Hun"? "The Royal Pee"?

... well, I do not doubt these headlines all sold him of lot of copies.

Well, I worked for the Sunday Times - but I'll say one thing for the Sun: they're a bunch of fantastic professionals. Yes, they go for the jugular, and yes, they're in terrible taste; but they have this fantastic vitality. Remember the "Up Yours, Delors" at the time of the Maastricht vote? Jacques Delors commented that Britain was the only EU country which had a real political debate at popular level. And it was the tabloids who broke the story of the Charles-Diana breakup - all the suality broadsheets were too worried about not being received at Buck House any more.

(Which one was "The Sun Talks To The Hun"? I'll agree that there's an amount of anti-German feeling still peddled in Britain - anti-French, too! - but be fair: the quality papers and mags do it all the same. The Nicholas Ridley interview was in the Spectator.)

As far as I recall, the headline was simply referring to an interview the (then) new German Ambassador gave. It must have been at a sex-scandal free time, that's usuallly when the anti-German or anti-French thing is peddled to, isn't it? I always thought it was the equivalent of "BILD sprach mit dem Toten" which has become the headline proverbial for the... standard... of our own dear tabloid.

Vitality: I suppose so. But just tell me this: if a left wing tabloid like the Daily Mirror would keep fueling the anti-American flame with these kind of stories or headlines (which for all I know the DM is doing), and published photos of, say, the daughters of Bush (if they were children) relieving themselves somewhere, would you still admire its vitality?

Sunday Times: I always liked the review section.

"BILD sprach mit dem Toten" sounds like fun. What was it about?

And of course the Mirror, which is left-wing, peddles anti-American tripe all the time! (They haven't got pix of Jenna & whatsername peeing, because, frankly, when it's a girl, it passes the strange but real limit beyond which a tabloid thinks it will be counterproductive for sales won't go.) The point is, they're not the only ones peddling it, and there are tabloids on the other side not peddling it. As long as you have a fair playing-ground, I can admire the vitality of everyone, including the Mirror's!

(You have to realise that I come from press-brain-dead France, where reverence for power and sheer cravenness means the most boring & incompetent press in Western Europe. Vitality is LIFE.)
