I'm reading the summerofhorror stories at a leisurely pace in between work, and so far I very much liked:

Also, in anticipation of the impending release of Sandman, here's a new Neil Gaiman interview.

Given it's only a few days more till Sandman, the tv series, is released on Netflix, I wonder about the inevitable changes the new medium and incarnations will provide for fanfic, as it always happens when a literary property is (successfully) filmed. Which characters who didn't use to get paired or woobified will suddenly be discovered by fanfic writers? Which old favorites will get a new creative boost? Personally, I'm hoping for both Johanna Constantine and Lyta Hall stories, of which there's still a lamentable lack online. In terms of what definitely will get written: I'm pretty sure there will be lots of Corinthian dark fic (and Corinthian/Reader stories). Depending on what kind of chemistry Gwendolin Christie's Lucifer has with Tom Sturridge's Morpheus, there might be a boost in Dream/Lucifer tales (though those exist already). There will definitely be all kind of Endless incest pairings. And there will be mighty fandom battles about the correct tagging to differentiate comics based fanfic from tv based fanfic, not to mention battles around the Lucifer Morningstar (Sandman) vs Lucifer Morningstar (tv) problem. Will there be Mervin Pumpkinhead fanfic due to Mark Hamil voicing him? Only a few days more to find out...

Depending on what kind of chemistry Gwendolin Christie's Lucifer has with Tom Sturridge's Morpheus, there might be a boost in Dream/Lucifer tales (though those exist already).

I would not be surprised. Personally, I find Lucifer in the Sandman comics boring, but Christie is a great screen presence, and I'm hopeful she'll really bring out some interesting new dimensions in the character. Excited for the premiere.

She has indeed, and I was hoping for good parts for her post GoT, so I'm really looking forward to finding out what she makes of Lucifer!

I think Dream could get that super-woobified "the slender dark-haired man" niche - Krycek, Ianto, Loki, etc.

A distinct possiblity, BUT I also think it might not last long, since his awful behavior towards Nada is bound to come up within the first season (since it covers A Doll's House), and I could see that having a stronger impact on fandom than it did back in the day before Seasons of Mist had other characters including Death point out it really was a shitty thing to do.

Also, there's what he does to Alex Burgess. I really hope there will be some equivalent of this despite the far larger time gap between Dream's capture and his freeing himself, because to me Alex waking up again when Morpheus dies and getting forgiven by Daniel, and Paul, who in "Preludes and Nocturnes" seems to be with him mainly for the money, still being there because he really does care is an emotional beat I don't want to miss. But to reach it there needs to be the original punishment, and I always thought it telling about Morpheus that he treats Alex Burgess and John Dee very differently in "Preludes and Nocturnes" . Dee is hands down the worst and does incredibly awful things to other people, and came close to world destruction, but because he inadvertently ended up freeing Morpheus from ruby dependence and empowering him instead of destroying him, he gets off with a slap on the wrist, so to speak. Alex Burgess' main sin is cowardice - not freeing Morpheus once Roderick Burgess is dead - and some greed (trying to get Morpheus to give him something so there's a point to all this) - but as wrong as his continuing to keep Morpheus prisoner is, he's not harming anyone else. And he gets to live in non-stop psychic torture for the next few years as punishment. Lesson: in Dream's eyes, harming himself is the greater crime, compared to the torture and murder of a great many people which John Dee did.

I’m in two minds about the series. Simply because it was so seminal for me (the comic), I harbour entirely unjustified proprietary feeeeelings, I admit. (A bit like with the Borgias, haha!)

But new Lucifer Morningstar/Sandman… that opens possibilities… curious what a new generation might do with these two. (Again, feeeeeelings; I love the comics Lucifer to bits. Even the spin-off comic one.)

I know how it's like to feel possessive like that (though not about Sandman), so I can imagine your inner strife. :) But yes, there are so many possibilities, and the prospect of new creative voices discovering a fandom and characters one cares for is exciting!

(Comics Lucifer isn't my favourite, but I liked him a lot, which is why I felt incredibly let down by the tv series which uses a few of the names but none of the characterisation and plots of either Sandman or the Lucifer spin-off. It's an occasionally amusing procedural in its own right, but has nothing to do with the comics characters.)
