Overheard, during four years of Angel fandom

"They killed Doyle? Wah! The show is ruined!"

"WESLEY? Wesley is going to replace Doyle? How can a dull stuck-up Brit ever replace an adorable Irish half-demon? And that actor, I hate him! The show is ruined!"

"I sure hope they won't use that Gunn fellow to ursurp Wesley's place and screentime. That would ruin the show."

"Darla being back sucks. Julie Benz can't act. And she's taking all the screentime away from Cordy! The show is ruined!"

"Where the hell are Darla and Drusilla? Their story wasn't wrapped up at all. And why are we suddenly in Disneyland? The show is ruined!"

"Lindsey gone? But he must return! Lilah is so dull. She can't be the main W&H person. Lilah without Lindsey, all the time? The show is RUINED."

"Why did we had to add this Fred person? Why couldn't we add Lilah to the credits instead? The show is ruined."

"Darla pregnant? How much more soap-opera like can you get? THE SHOW IS RUINED."

"Darla dead? Sacrificing herself? Waaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh. That's so out of character. And also, the show is ruined."

"Why doesn't anybody kill the baby already? Connor ruins the show, I tell you."

"Now Connor is back as a teenager? Doesn't Joss know we need no whiny teenagers on AtS? This is so selling out to the demographic. He ruins the showwwwwwww!"

"Lilah dead? Joss is a woman-hater in his heart who only likes girls and can't understand the complexity of Lilah. The show is RUINED!"

(Interjection: This is where Angel Fandom rule No.1 comes into place: When in doubt, bash Joss. Never Tim Minear, only rarely the departed David Greenwalt, and never any of the other Angel writers, except for random swipes at David Fury because of his BTVS status, or at Mere Smith, because we can't have OTHER fangirls graduating from writing posts at the Bronze to writing scripts on the show.)
(In BTVS fandom, of course, rule No.1 is: When in doubt, bash Marti. THEN bash Joss.)

"Oh, how we have fallen after Angelus and Faith. This Jasmine character sucks. She's supposed to be the Big Bad? Joss is so working out his Firefly issues and it's ruining the show."

"Oh. Wow. But...this can't be the end of Connor, right? What do you mean, VK will only be back for an episode or so? And CC on a recurring basis instead of a regular? No, this can't be because of her baby. This is clearly Joss' fault. Now I'm seriously wondering about the future of the show..."

"Who? Are you sure? In season 5? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Joss, you bastard, you're ruining the show!!!!"

And that's all I'm going to say about the current hysteria.

This is embarassing. Hm. Who else could it have been?

Anyway, some of the slash clichés cited were stories in which female canon characters either dissappear altogether, or are transformed into Understanding Yentas, or into the Evil Opposition Of The Boys Getting It On. Which amused me, because those are pet annoyances of mine. And I've read plenty of good slash stories who managed to avoid them.

I have a feeling I read this post too, although I don't remember who wrote it. I certainly agree with the sentiments and have expressed them myself... just not, I'm fairly sure, in LJ.

Unless senility is closer than I feared, anyway.
