Carnival in Venice, Part I
Feb. 17th, 2007 08:40 amBack, and rather exhausted, but loaded with enough photos to necessitate two posts in order not to break anyone's viewscreen. At the start of this week, my Aged Parent started to ask the type of "are you very busy...?" question which usually leads to an impromptu journey, so I had a clue, but the fact it worked out on short notice (i.e. that we got a room) was a pleasant surprise anyway. Mind you, it helps when you're living near the Alps so Venice is four hours by car away.
I love Venice; this was my fifth or so visit, second time during the Carnival, and I remain as enthralled as I was when seeing the city for the first time as a teenager.
So, before I start of with the gorgeous costumes who are one reason why Venice competes only with Rio when it comes to "most stunning city during the Carnival" category, here's an opening look at Venice itself, with its fatal gift of beauty, as Byron put it.

And now, it's time for those costumes you encounter everywhere. I'm trying to build up, but it's hard with all those beauties:

And that was before the last clouds went away, leaving only sunshine and blue sky.

Re: the above couple: aren't they adorable?

I'm somewhat proud of the above, because the Aged Parent didn't manage to get her, wings and all, but my new little camera pulled it off.

The next one was one of the finalists for best costume during Thursday:
