Pictures from Bali
Jul. 9th, 2008 02:39 pmJust the first installment, of course. I've been busy these last two days, and the time here has barely begun.
This is the view that greets us every morning, looking out of our rooms. Not a famous temple, btw - there are thousands on this island, and this one is a sort of family tempel to the local royalty - but great to look at nonetheless.

Inside detail:

The next town, Udub, is famous for its artists. On the 15th, there is going to be a big cremation ceremony for a prince here. They're already building everything to be burned later, at the Udub palace:

The statues at the entrances are given their own festivity sarongs, too:

Now, today, we had very mixed weather - sometimes cloudy, sometimes pure sunshine. It started off cloudy, at Pura Ulun Danu Batur, a beautiful temple at a lake, besieged by tourists like yours truly and Japanese honeymooners:

Next, driving through the countryside, we faced the rice terraces.

Then we reached the so called "jungle temple", Pura Luhar Batukan:

After which we headed back to the coast. Lo and behold, the weather changed as we arrived at Pura Tanah Lot. Sunshine! (Also: lots of pilgrims and tourists, but c'est la vie.)

And finally, our day ended here, in Pura Tanan Ayun, a temple build on a little island and surrounded by water lillies:
