Naturally, I'm a happy reader of everyone else's Doctor Who Christmas stories as well, of which there have been many these last weeks. Here are my three Doctor Who favorites, starting with one that is not holiday-related but still a very recent favourite:
Fire Escape: a Farscape crossover, in which the Tenth Doctor encounters John Crichton & Co. Repeatedly, since for some reason his TARDIS keeps wandering between Moya and Talyn. It's an amazing amalgan of both universes, set post-Journey's End for the Doctor and during season 3 of Farscape for the Moya and Talyn lot, and uses the non-linearity of time travel and Farscape's mixture of craziness and angst to wonderful effect. The end, which simultanously is the beginning and reveals how the Doctor ended up in the Unchartered Territories to begin with, packs a wonderful emotional and wistful punch.
A Winter's Tale: in which the Seventh Doctor and Ace end up in World War I during the Christmas Truce. This hits several of my buttons: I've always thought the Christmas Truce of 1914 - when English, German and French soldiers started to fraternize and exchange gifts across the battle lines - is one of the most humane and simultanously saddest (because of what followed in the next years) true stories, and of course I love the Seven and Ace interaction when he's simultanously well-meaning and ever so manipulative. (When Nine takes Rose to see the Earth destroyed, he's just being messed up and showing off. Seven does that sort of thing as part of a complicated educational scheme.)
Secret Santa: a post-Journey's End story about my fave New Who duo, the Tenth Doctor and Donna, which isn't a fix-it and nonetheless is about their friendship, what they were and are to each other, and yes, Christmas. Which is, after all, their anniversary. (The Runaway Bride is still my favourite special.) I found it far more satisfactory than many a story in which what happens in Journey's End is simply ignored or reversed, and it left me full of love for them both.
