Oh no

Just found out Andy Hallett died. Lorne was such a great part of Angel; the idea of a karaoke-singing empath demon could have remained a one-episode gag, or at least remained confined to a single season, if Andy Hallett hadn't filled the character with such life, charm, and as the writers used him more and more beyond giving exposition, depth. [livejournal.com profile] londonkds points out that Lorne has one of the key moments of the series finale, and it's a great and heartbreaking performance by Andy Hallet. Sorry, Lindsey fans, but it was really Lorne I felt for in that scene. And of course it's impossible to watch and not to think of Lorne in an earlier episode, Spin the Bottle, where at the end we find out he's telling the story to an empty room, and then to understand why he did that. It occurs to me that in many way's, Lorne's voice is the narrative voice of Angel the Series - sometimes whimsical, sometimes cynical, with affection for the characters but also seeing them too clearly to want to stay with them forever. And that voice was given life by Andy Hallett.

When I first saw Lorne I figure it was another one of those one-shot demons. But I grew to love the character and now can't think of Angel without Lorne.

Will miss him...

This is the perfect tribute to Lorne, and Andy. *sniff*

And yes, that scene in Spin the Bottle is perfect in retrospect.

How very, very sad. He was a very talented guy, and too young.

It's been too long since I've seen Spin the Bottle, but I definitely agree with you about that moment in the finale. When he says "Goodnight, folks," you don't have a shred of doubt that he really is done with that life.

Part of me just can't get past him being only 33 - I hadn't realized he'd been so young when he was on Angel.

Oh, yes: Lorne's part in that series finale is one of my clearest and most intense memories of the entire series. I'm so sad to hear that Andy Hallet has died.

Wow. I'm just... wow.

I don't have the words to say about this. That sucks.

I was terribly sad to hear this, too. Lorne was easily my favorite character on Angel, and Hallett played him with such marvelous warmth. And, geez, he was younger than me. :(

I'll have to sing "I Will Survive" at the next karaoke I attend in his honor. How sad!

It was a shock to read that. He was so talented, and you wouldn't find anyone who had a bad word to say about him. And he was so young, I didn't know he was only 33.

Sorry, Lindsey fans, but it was really Lorne I felt for in that scene. And of course it's impossible to watch and not to think of Lorne in an earlier episode, Spin the Bottle, where at the end we find out he's telling the story to an empty room, and then to understand why he did that.

I had to think of these exact two scenes. I thought they were poignant in an understated way... the toll that fight took on their souls.

He brought a lot to the character, and to the show. So much heart, so much warmth.

That's a fascinating thought. He certainly added something very valuable and enhanced the show tremendously.

Oh wow. :( That's so heartbreaking. Awful to see such a talented person die so young.

That is really terrible; he seemed older and wiser than 33 though really all I know about him was his portrayal of Lorne who was one of the best supporting characters in the Jossverse. There is a certain delicious irony that it was the group's resident full-blooded demon who rejected the so-called heroic lifestyle of the cast because it was ultimately inhumane.

I come here following a link in [livejournal.com profile] monanotlisa LJ, and I'm really happy I did.
This is exactly what I was feeling, and unable to express. So long, Lorne.
Rest in peace, Andy.
