More memes and ficathon musings
Jun. 24th, 2009 10:12 amRe: yesterday's meme, how could I forget John Henry and Savannah from The Sarah Connor Chronicles? HOW? *feels guilty as loves potentially apocalyptic or messianic cybernetic network / little girl friendship fiercely*
In other news, and remix-related, one downside of having finished one's story for a ficathon early is that one has to wait for eons for feedback. In this particular case, I also doubt I'll get much response anyway, because a) old fandom, b) unpopular pairing, and c) hated episode background. But then again, one never knows. Last year, I never expected much feedback for my Rome story, either (small fandom, it's all about a mother/daughter relationship instead of Pullo & Vorenus), and I'm still getting some, so really, anything goes. As a writer, I'm pretty happy because I got to explore some issues that have been bugging me for a while, and I flatter myself the end result is worth reading. (I also think it's a bit obvious I wrote it, but half the charm of posting anonymously in ficathons is to wait and see how people respond without knowing the writer.)
More memes:
Name a fandom, and I'll give you the scoop on at least three of my unpopular opinions related to that fandom.
Caveat: I think this particular meme has the drawback of having an inherently flawed premise. There are fandoms in which things like a majority consensus simply doesn't exist, so any opinion not shared by one faction is bound to be shared by another. (Doctor Who comes to mind.) This being said, shoot!

Date: 2009-06-24 01:56 pm (UTC)2) I didn't have a problem with Martha's fiance Tom not appearing on screen in either Torchwood s2 or DW s4. While fanfic describing how Martha and Tom met again (from her pov, and for the first time from his) and fell in love is enjoyable to read, it's not a story that needed to be told on screen in episodes where Martha, while an important recurring character, was not a regular. (Now if Martha had still been the companion in s4, it would have been another matter; then I would have demanded to see the relationship developed on screen.) The existence of Tom and her betrothal to him was one, but not the only sign of Martha having moved on, enjoying her post-Doctor life. Good for her. Having this mentioned in dialogue was enough for me.
3.) The Christmas Invasion is my least favourite Christmas special, and Harriet Jones' final two scenes in it are a big reason why. This being said, I still don't think of them as a complete black and white (i.e. Harriet completely right, the Doctor completely wrong), because ordering an enemy who has surrended to be shot down doesn't send a "don't mess with Earth" warning to potential other invaders as much as it sends a "if YOU invade and should be defeated, make sure to kill each and everyone in the process of retreating because you can't negotiate with these people, they'll just shoot you down" message. Also, I think the Doctor's reaction is entirely in character with earlier regenerations, not something only Ten would have done, but then, I wrote an entire story about why, and I'll leave it at the statement of opinion here.
