Re, the most recent Lost episode, basically, what [personal profile] wee_warrior said. Also, . By which I don't mean Richard's telenovela origins but my fondness for the Roman world and the Latin language. Ever since last season told us the Others used Latin, I've been getting my hopes up Richard might be a Roman, but no. This, incidentally, is not something that objectively makes the episode bad, it's just me pouting. I started to lose hope when he went to the ship earlier this season anyway, as this was a pretty big hint that he used to be locked up in same. On that note, British slave traders in the 1860s, show? Really? Ah well. If on Angel I accept human Darla in Virginia ca. 1610, complete with the Master posing as a Catholic-looking priest, I can handwave this on Lost as well. I did go "Jacob, did you just quote the Augustinian justification for the existence of evil as it relates to free will?" at one point, mind, wondering who among the writing staff was into the Church fathers. In conclusion, I'm quoting [personal profile] wee_warrior again: if I had to spend eternity locked on an island with a sanctimonious prick who kidnaps hapless strangers to act out his morality plays, I'd be homicidal as well.

Last week or so G.R.R. Martin wrote a hilarious Jaime Lannister versus Chtuluh vignette vor some internet voting competition; this week Naomi Novik writes Temeraire versus Jaime Lannister. Sorry, Jaime, but that's it. I'm voting for the adorable Celestial Dragon. His sister is way more interesting than yours. (The saga has many layered characters, but Cersei is pretty much one dimensionally bad news, and not even that good at it. I hope Lena Heady will add some dimension in the tv version.)

West Wing fanfic rec: Five things Jed Bartlet learned. (He likes Latin as well. *points sulkily to Lost remark above.* Seriously, though, this is very enjoyable to read, and gets Jed Bartlet just right.)

From fictional American politics to real ones: An open letter to convervatives has more links than you can shake from a tree regarding the incredibly bizarre and somewhat scary real life satire that is the American Republican Party.
