Fannish5: Most Misunderstood
Jul. 24th, 2010 12:20 pmList 5 works (where work could be a series, movie, book, episode, or even a character) that you feel are misunderstood, and why
This is a great excuse of revisiting defensive meta posts of yesteryear. :) Which make my arguments for me. *whistles "I'm just a soul whose intentions are good..."*
1.) The Star Wars Prequels. (One of the earliest posts I wrote on lj. Was written after Attack of the Clones was released, hence there's nothing about Revenge of the Sith in it.) Seven years later, I still stand by my arguments.
2.) Marti Noxon's contribution to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Also a very early post; I'd have thought the Marti bashing to be a thing of the past, but earlier this year I came across another case in point, so, evidently not.
3.) Buffy not killing Ben and Duncan McLeod's (not) black-and-white world view. Relates specifically to BTVS' The Gift as well as several Highlander episodes and the charge that heroes (specifically these two) get to have their cake and eat it, i.e. "have someone else do their dirty work for them", as it's usually phrased. I saw it differently. (Still do.) (Oh, and please don't quote the comics to me; I'm a "only tv episode on screen canon is canon" person, which means no deleted scenes, no interviews and no comics for arguments.)
4.) Connor (of Angel: The Series). Popular with some people on my flist but generally deeply disliked, and like Dawn on BTVS cited as "characters that prove their shows have jumped the shark" by the mass media. My impression is that this, too, hasn't much changed. I passionately disagree, for reasons argued in the essay linked.
5.) Quark. Not as unpopular as the SW prequels or Connor or Marti Noxon, definitely has his fans, but ends up listed as a DS9 drawback a lot, too, so I feel justified in declaring him to be misunderstood as well. The essay argues why he's not only quintessential for his show to me but became my favourite DS9 character, despite firm competition.
