Today we had sunshine and blue sky in addition to the snow, which means my hometown was literally sparkling. Clearly, this called for another pic spam.

Let's start with an overview:

That's from St. Michael's, one of our seven hills (Franconian Rome, remember? *cough*Bambergians are extremely modest* cough*) and of course also the name of the church/former monastery on top of it. The one you're viewing from St. Michael's, overlooking the old city centre, is the cathedral, the Dom, and in front of it the former residence of the prince bishops. (Of both more soon.). Close-up of the view:

You can also see Little Venice from this hill pretty well:

St. Michael's itself looks like this in winter:

Our baroque bishops had a thing for mythology, hence the Mercury statue in the fountain in front of the church:

What makes the inside of St. Michael's special are the 365 healing herbs painted on the ceiling. I mean:

On to the most beautiful square of the city centre, which is framed by the Gothic-Romanic cathedral, a Renaissance palace, and a Baroque residence:

In reverse temporal order, the newest building first, i.e. the baroque residence.

The Alte Hofhaltung, the Renaissance courtyard where in summer theatre productions take place:

Yours truly in same:

One exits it to the square here:

And sees the cathedral:

Which is still decorated in the Christmas spirit:

The barriers around the Tilman Riemenschneider-made tomb of the imperial couple who built the catheral, Heinrich II and his wife Kunigunde, were removed for the holidays, so I could take close-ups this time:

On to the old city hall, which looks as pretty in winter as it does in summer:

And the two residences built by one of the wealthiest Jewish citizens of Baroque Bamberg, Johann Philip Böttinger, the Böttingerhaus and the water palace Concordia:

And with one last look over rooftops and churches, Bamberg bids you farewell:

Thank you for this -- I'm absolutely taken with the ceiling with the healing herbs. That is a rather unique way of decorating a vaulted church ceiling that I've never come across before.

Gorgeous! The snow makes Bamberg look like a fairytale.
