Valentine's Day, 50 Years Ago
Feb. 14th, 2011 06:50 pmBecause I can and because the story is hysterical: as this site kindly informs me that on February 14th, 1961, the Beatles perform at the Cassanova (sic) Club, Liverpool, and at the Litherland Town Hall. Apparantly someone (this was pre-Brian Epstein, so it can't have been him) thought they should do something special for the occasion, so they do a Valentine's Day tailored-set. What does this mean? Well, among other things it means that at Litherland Town Hall, Paul sings Elvis Presley's Wooden Heart, wearing an honest-to-god wooden heart pinned to his coat, covered with satin and embroidered with the names John, Paul, George, and Pete. The heart is raffled off, and the winner will also get a kiss from Paul. When the winning girl goes on stage to get her prize and kiss, dozens of other girls follow her, squealing in an early display of Beatlemania. John is knocked to the floor by stampeding fangirls and the club's bouncers close the curtain and stop the show until order has been restored.

...the things John had to put up with. :) By the way, if you look at the poster, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes are also part of the show which means Ringo was present as well (it was his pre-Beatles band, remember?).
Incidentally, just to show Valentine's Day really had it in for John Lennon, on February 14th, 1972 he and Yoko are guest hosts for The Mike Douglas Show. Mike Douglas seems to have thought it would be a nice idea to serenade them with a love song. Which one does he pick, faithful readers?
...Michelle.
I rest my case.
