...because there are few things as glorious as discovering a new song from an old favourite. In this case, the 2008 song Sing the Changes from Paul McCartney's Fireman album, which for some reason I hadn't heard before. However, while reading a 2009 interview with Marianne Faithfull (which btw is a good one about her own music, with some asides about her contemporaries, check it out), I came across this passage:

Q: There are lot of people who recently have made their best album in years. There’s Leonard Cohen, then there’s Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Paul McCartney’s Fireman album...

A: That’s very good, The Fireman. I never thought it would stop for Paul - and it wouldn’t have stopped with John [Lennon] either. They’re just really good songwriters, and really that’s the basis of any great record.

Q:The Fireman surprised a lot of people who were probably split in opinion about Paul.

A: I know, yeah. I really love him because I’ve known him for so long. I’ve known him since I was 17. Mind you, I’ve known Keith too since I was 17. This is now 45 years, so I’m not going to be disloyal to Paul. Anyway, I’m fond of him, and I also thought The Fireman was really good - whatever people think about him. He’s also looking much better now, now he’s not with that funny woman. I told him when I saw him in Paris last week how great the songs were, and he’s still very happy when you notice. He’s very important, Paul. Really.

Well, self, thought I, you don't have the time for the entire album right now, but you might as well listen to one of the songs Marianne liked so much. So I went to YouTube and checked out Sing the Changes, which is the song from that album he currently does in concert. And, wow. Why is it this doesn't get played more on the radio? Or does it, and I just missed it before? Because this is is pure musical joy. Not in a gentle way, either; this is raw emotion. Just - wow. Can't stop listening.

You probably hadn't heard of it because that was an electronic album originally released under the pseudonym "The Fireman", for possibly pretentious "if my target audience knew it was me they wouldn't bother listening to it" reasons.
