Endings drawing near....
Apr. 9th, 2004 07:20 pmA busy Good Friday, mostly in a good way. Saw my aunt who is going through a horrible time and was able to cheer her up. Acted out delightful conversation between Londo and Delenn over at the journal. And then there were the Easter Wells; in the region I was born in and am currently staying with my parents for the holidays, all the villages decorate their wells (springs? – I’m not sure about the correct English word) with green and eggs, painted eggs. The greenery often, but not always forms crowns, and all the eggs hanging from it are painted in vibrant primary colours. It looks very pretty, and every village here has a different one. So that’s what we did during the afternoon.
I think I still haven’t grasped, not completely, that there won’t be any more Jossverse episodes soon. Not of any show. This is what I mourn more than the passing of Angel. The later is still sad, but five years are five years, and many stories about the characters were told. (As opposed to, say, Firefly. Grrr. Argh.) If Firefly was still on the air, or any other new show written by the ME staff, the cancellation would not feel as monumental. Undoubtedly all the writers will find other jobs; they are too talented not to. (One of these days, when Mr. Mollari allows me to have more of my own life again, I'll write an eloge to most of them.) But they were such a good team, both the BTVS and the AtS combination, and of course the Firefly one. And I think that this combination will be irrevocably lost once AtS is over. Damn.
Now; the Agent Parents had to hurry away since they had totally forgotton a birthday, which gives me at least two hours sans family, and I could go and play out the grand confrontation which Delenn has kindly arranged for Londo and G’Kar, except that I told
sabine101 I couldn’t show up before 10 pm Middle European time. To start now or wait till later? Stay tuned…

Date: 2004-04-09 10:04 am (UTC)That sounds very cool! Interestingly enough, in the area of the state where I grew up, and many people are of German descent(mainly Moravian) it's common to hang the painted eggs on the budding branches of the trees outside. I've never seen this anywhere else, though I'm told that people do it in Pennsylvania. I wonder if this is a modified custom.
Another different custom from that area is what people call "Moravian stars" or "star of Bethlehems". These are white paper stars, three dimensional and some several feet across, with many points, made of folded and glued parchment. At Christmas time, people hang them above their front doors, from lintels, from their front porches, or on a tree outside. In earlier days they sometimes had a lighted candle inside, but now they are all electric. Have you ever heard of something similar in Germany? Very curious. They are quite beautiful, and something I grew up with.

Paper stars - though even more straw stars - are very popular decorations for Christmas trees here, but not for outside. Fascinating to compare these customs, no?

Date: 2004-04-09 10:24 am (UTC)I was in Germany for Easter on a language exchange many years ago and I remember the German Easter as being great fun. No decorated wells but Easter egg hunts and painted eggs. Well-dressing does happen in some villages in England but I don't know if it's specific to Easter or particularly regional. It doesn't happen in the London suburbs!
Completely with you on the absence of the Jossverse from our screens. I suppose we were lucky to have the shows for as long as we did (except for Firefly :::sob:::) but the break up of the whole team is such a damn shame.
Gorgeous Servalan icon!
