The Good Wife 3.18 Gloves are off
Mar. 20th, 2012 12:43 pmIn which your reviewer experiences a certain type of smugness that comes with calling something a season ago.
In my review of the season 2 finale, here, I had written: Lastly: the blonde investigator wasn't the only cheater in this episode. I don't know about you, but Will not calling Tammy does not equal him ending the relationship before jumping into bed with Alicia to me. Mind you, given that Kalinda told him last episode Alicia and Peter split, I wouldn't be surprised if the "Tammy is in London and was there with her bags when etc." story was made up on his part to cover for "I dumped Tammy as soon as I heard you were available at last". Either way, it contributes to my general distinctly cool attitude towards Will. Whatever he felt, he didn't tell Tammy she was only supposed to be around for as long as Alicia was off-limits; when he asked her to stay the last episode we saw her in, he gave her the impression of being ready for something more long term. I do wonder whether it has occured to Alicia that technically, she's the Other Woman now.
At the time, hardly anyone agreed with me. But lo and behold, here in this episode the show itself does and uses Tammy to make the very very point to Alicia. Which makes Alicia get over herself in regards to Kalinda at last, beyond politeness and working together. May I say: ha! And also "I told you so", because it's always fun to be able to say that.
Okay, end of smugness, on to the review proper. Louis Canning was fun as always, and Alicia using him to get a raise from Diane while he uses her was well done. And Diane was reigning supreme as ever, keeping the squabbling equity partners in line and juggling two hot men. Mind you, I'm aware of a certain double standard on my part here, but I tell myself that Diane isn't in a committed relationship with either fellow, and that once she is, she'll tell the other guy it's over. Anyway, clearly Diane has the best taste in boyfriends out of anyone on this show. (Well, we never saw Owen's boyfriends, but still.) As I approve of both Jack and Kurt, and they both have the excellent taste of being enthralled by Diane as well, I can't decide which one I'm rooting for. "Rooting" as in, keeping the man in question in Diane's life, not something like marriage; Diane as queen bee without a consort is as it should be.
Incidentally, the Alicia-Diane squaring off was handled just rightly. They were both being professionals, and I think in the end Diane respected Alicia for not backing off.
As to who I think leaked the Will info: all of them, in classic Murder on the Orient Express fashion.
Case of the week: was okay. I feel like I should know the judge, but can't place the actress right now. Also, was this the first time we've seen Julius working in tandem with Alicia for a case?

Date: 2012-03-20 01:42 pm (UTC)The Good Wife is remarkable in that the older female characters (older for TVland) are presented squarely as competent and often sexually attractive without any particular highlighting. The judge in this episode - in plenty of other crappy shows I'd be delighted that they featured someone like her. In TGW, she's normal.
