Day 05 ~ Favourite quote from The Borgias.
Something which is only funny and hilarious in context, and delivered in Jeremy Irons drawl: Cardinal Piccolomini, unburden your soul.
As with all gags, it loses by explaining, but I'll try. In the pilot, Rodrigo goes to some expense (ahem), money and benefits wise, to get the necessary votes in order to becoem pope. Over the course of the season, there are a lot of conspiracies, attempts to depose him, and in the last third, most of the cardinals high tail it out of Rome because of the French invasion, expecting the city to be sacked and, you know, rather wanting to avoid that. Rodrigo (and his daughter!) manage to manipulate the French king into a (temporary) alliance instead. Cue Cardinals coming back, very embarrassed and unsure just how angry the Pope is with them (read: which punishment he'll exact). Rodrigo, who is really good at trolling, tells them a little sack cloth wearing and, you know, handing over those benefits and the money they got a while back will do just fine, and the way he phrases that is, you guessed it, "Cardinal Piccolomini, unburden your soul."
It's one of those moments where on the one hand you should totally dissapprove because well, embodiment of pre-Luther Church corruption, but on the other, well, the cardinals had it coming and Rodrigo is just plain better at playing the game (most of the time) than they are. And enjoying himself a lot after a year of getting conspired against. But, to conclude with another Rodrigo quote, "what would Rome be without its plots?"
