Budapest I
Sep. 21st, 2012 07:22 pmAs it's a seven hours drive to Budapest, I spent most of Thursday in the car. But a late afternoon & evening stroll already was great, and today was fantastic, not least because the weather played along. Now the APs & self are thoroughly exhausted and happy. Wouldn't you be, walking around here?

More below the cut!
As you can see, the Danube is that blue. Budapest is actually two cities, Buda and Pest. Pest has the opera:

The great market halls:

The smaller of two synagogues, the one for the orthodox:

The bigger one, at the place where Theodor Herzl was born and which is named after him:

St. Stephen's, where the Habsburgs got themselves crowned kings of Hungary (The other k on the "k and k monarchy")

And Parliament:

Buda has various castles, including the main one which is actually from the middle ages but was burned down and rebuild so often that the current look is mostly baroque:

Behind the old fortress is St. Matthias:

Below St. Matthias is the Fishermen's Fortress:

If you've done lots of climbing, you might want to relax in one of the many big baths. The Romans built their Thermae, the Turks their Hamans, and the current day Hungarians love to visit the baths hailing from the 19th century. Like probably the most famous one, which is on the Buda side of the Danube, and called the Gellert:

(Clearly, if Natasha and Clint were involved in a fight here, it happened in one of these baths.)
It's good form to thank St. Stephen for the great day you're having:

(Legend has it he's the same guy who is depicted in my hometown and became one of our city symbols)

But never mind Bamberg legend, let's admire the blue Danube and Budapest some more:

And thus I bid you an exhausted but happy good night:
