Catching up with my current tv now that I'm back in my apartment.

We got a Marcus Bell episode! Watching this after marathoning four seasons of The Wire was distinctly weird since Bell's brother basically had the same cv a lot of The Wire characters have. (Though Bell himself and Gregson are cops in a much kinder universe than The Wire presents.) Anyway, I appreciated the new background for Bell, that his brother wasn't the killer (mind you, given that Bell's ex much as Gregson's ex partner in the Gregson centric eppisode a while ago had no reason to be in the episode other than to be the villain, it was by tv laws kind of evident who was, but the cases aren't why one watches this show), and the way Holmes' interaction with both Bell and Gregson was full of callbacks to M, with Holmes' behaviour here being far more of a genuine apology than his lame not attempt previously was, despite or because not saying he was sorry. Or perhaps I should say: this time, his behaviour makes it clear he knows what he did back then was wrong, full stop, and not because of hurt feelings. His respect for both Gregson and Bell also came across clearly.

The subplot about Watson making her decision - after Holmes making his offer using the crucial word "partner" - was all I wanted for this transition which we've been working up to all season, too. Including that it doesn't come at a moment of crisis, as would have been the case directly after M, where Watson saying yes would have been mostly for Holmes' sake, but when he's okay and it can be about what she wants for her life; that it comes after several episodes highlighting that she's both good at investigating and enjoying it, so that we know when her therapist says it's time to move on it's not only the friendship with Holmes she doesn't want to leave behind, but the investigating. That Holmes isn't in the least using the "you lied" card but appreciates why she did it from the moment he found out, and instead tried to make it possible for her to move on if she was only staying out of concern for him. The whole revelations speech, and the corresponding final scene where Watson states her working conditions. (Complete with revenge for that self defense nonsense.) I just want to draw sparkly hearts around that scene. In a platonic bffs who fight crime manner, of course. :)

It really strikes me how much Gregson and Bell are being set apart as pinnacles of honour and "good cops" in comparison to practically every other law enforcement officer we've met - Gregson's ex-partner, Bell's ex-girlfriend, and the DEA agent.

Last scene: was great, though having been hit in the face by a couple of basketballs in my life, I really wish Watson hadn't done that. Ouch!

I have heard certain rumours about a certain someone returning, she said vaguely.

I'm so glad they didn't drag this plotline out until the end of the season. It's hard for me to imagine a detective of Holmes' abilities being totally unaware of Joan's unpaid status. But the revelation that he knows and his proposal was so amazing. I haven't had a broship this wonderful since 10 & Donna and this has the potential to be even better.
