My Angel/ Six Feet Under crossover, The Burying Kind, was originally posted by chapters as a work in progress on lj, which I don't do often. (Usually I wait until I have finished something.) And in the feedback for the first two chapters, ffutures kept asking whether Dawn would show up, because the actress who played Buffy's little sister had since played a wildly different character (a Britney Spears like teen pop star named Celeste) on Six Feet Under, so obviously in a crossover, there was potential for shenanigans. I hadn't planned on it, but thinking about it suddenly gave me an idea for David Fisher and for a way to end the wake, and once I had it, I couldn't imagine the story without it. And yet, if not for the questions about Dawn...

Ah, that's interesting - and an advantage of posting a WIP, although I suppose it could equally work the other way, with fans requesting things you absolutely didn't want to write :)

You know, I did this a lot when I started, partly because I was too new to have good beta relationships or have a good idea of what the conventions or the expectations were for various fandoms. And in the process I got a lot of valuable comments that helped me shape the rest of the story (the tradeoff being that I started various things I never finished...)

These days I mostly rely on betas for that but there's still something about the WIP feedback that makes an interesting process.

That's a very good point: the WIP as a way to get input on the crafting of the story when you don't have/can't find a beta. It makes it more of a collaborative process.

And, yeah, you really have to be reasonably confident about finishing it... which, alas, I can't trust myself to do. *pokes WIP folder*

Well, in practical terms I wouldn't, because I know a bit of the life of a scriptwriter, and it demands so much subjugation and letting others participate and dictate, whereas I prefer to be an autocratic tyrant in my writing who can decide plots and characterisations alone, with only some wise counselling. :) But okay, in theory. It would have to be an open canon, of course. Let's go for the sky: the Black Widow solo movie Marvel should do instead of Ant Man/Guardians/You Name The Guy Outing. It would be a huuuuuuuuuge challenge, but of course I'd love to do that.
