In which we find out more about Nurse Patsy, and in a different subplot about the perils of dating a curate.

Speaking of subplots, I was wondering when Shelagh & Patrick Turner would consider adoption. Mind you, obviously by his reaction to the adoption paper questions Dr. Turner has something in his past he doesn't want to tell, so that means trouble in paradise; my guess is that whatever it is won't be a problem with Shelagh once he confesses, but it might be with the adoption agencies.

Meanwhile, I was right about the Reverend being future love interest potential; it's Trixie who gets asked for a date by Tom the Curate, and because this kind of thing happens on this show, the date then turns into the class trip from hell, complete with children throwing up and motor trouble necessitating Trixie having to walk for a mile to the next telephone booth. Um, at least she got the rather nice sight of Tom in his 1950s undershirt and bare arms while trying to fix the bus? Seriously, though, Trixie is a champ for not bursting into tears during that series of calamities and instead soldiering through, wiping up vomit included.

Patsy's brusque and tactless statement about the baby and his mother and their respective weights at the start made me believe it would be a "Pasty learns tact" type of an episode, but no, instead it was a "Patsy had Jim Ballard's childhood as a child POW in a Japanese camp as a backstory and saves the day via action, not words" type of tale. Which was a good way to explore the new character, strenghts and flaws alike. This show is really good about using all types of scars WWII left as parts of its characters (guest stars and recurring). Also loved the patient's daughter Juliet dreaming of becoming a nurse and being additionally encouraged and inspired by Patsy.

Plot about the eloped Irish Protestant/Catholic lovers: I expected it to connect with Trixie's dating-the-Curate subplot sooner or later, though I thought Tom would marry them; baptizing the baby makes more thematic sense, though.

Lastly: Fred continues to be a sweetheart, finding and polishing that telescope for Sister Monica Joan!
