The Good Wife 5.13
Mar. 10th, 2014 01:40 pmIn which the Grand Nagus is back, and so is the NSA, who never left.
Another weird hiatus over, we're back with the lawyers, and several plot threads are picked up. From the minor to the major:
Alicia & Judge hitting on her: I thought he possibly wanted to join her firm? Now he wanted to write a book? Anyway, her being late for lunch cooled him off permanently, it seems (though note he's not professionally unfair towards her).
Cary & Kalinda: assuming Cary is lying when in fact he'd been telling the truth and making a severe professional misjudgment because of that seems to be the type of mistake Kalinda makes when she's emotionally involved ("compromised", the Black Widow would say). I.e. she likes Cary and therefore is all the more ready to assume he'll screw her over, not least because it's what she would do. This is why Kaliinda/Happy Relationship will never work out.
Marilyn: poor Marilyn. Not only because she's trying so hard to be ethical but also because she's right when telling Eli he excels at making enemies. Freezing her out and trying to bully her into a white washing report was exactly the wrong thing to do. (And once again an example of how this series tells us Eli is good at his job but shows us mostly how he screws up.
Grand Nagus Zeck Wallace Shawn is back as Lamont Bishop's personal lawyer Charles Lester, complete with insidieous intimidation tactics. Incidentally, I assume Alicia and everyone else had an off day, because that "I need you to be on call at ...o'clock" in the middle of an "who's the leak?" investigation was really obvious. On the other hand, the Bishop-Lester plot meant we got Nathan Lane and Wallace Shawn in the same scene together, which was great. (And of course Hayden is unruffled by Lester.)
As opposed to the last time the show used the NSA where I was upset because I thought we were supposed to see them as harmless comic relief, this time it's clear they're not. Not just because of their key contribution of the ongoing vote fraud plot thread, though because of that most importantly: their surveillance could destroy Alicia's life (if the curly haired new investigating character is right about Alicia potentially going to prison as well - not that I assume the show will go there, but in theory, is that possible? Because I'd have thought both as lawyer and as Peter's wife she's doubly immune from proscution?) . They're also used as stand-ins for the audience (well, a part of same), responding to the people they're surveying like they're characters in a tv show, and shipping some of them (behold the Will/Diane shipper). As if the episode wasn't meta enough, we also get Alicia and Grace watching a tv show which I don't recognize - help me out? Or is it one this series invented, a tv show in a tv show? One with confusing and potentially lethal relationships, it seems.
Also courtesy of the NSA and Eli being less than competent (if you've just been told there is surveillance, don't bring up such key information on the telephone, Eli!): Will is subpoena'd again. Considering Will's been an ass for most of the season, I assume this will be his heroic hour, and if I'm unlucky, it will bring him and Alicia back together again. (Let me enjoy the Will/Alicia less time as long as it lasts.)

I think too much has been destroyed by this point; both Alicia and Will are pretty suspicious of each other at this point, and with reason. Even our privileged, positive boy Cary is jaded by now. A quick make-up is not in the cards on The Good Wife, where plots can be silly but human beings are generally provided with proper motivation -- well, I guess that is true for the white and non-Jewish characters (for God knows Eli could use better writing, and Kalinda even more so; let's not speak of guest stars of color).
And, isn't The Good Wife good to go for another season? If so I would think A/W is still endgame, but we're not there yet in S4.

Date: 2014-03-11 07:19 am (UTC)As you know, I am forever a Kalinda/Alicia shipper (though sadly they are moving away from any kind of relationship at all between these two ladies).
Speaking of many women at once in one location, regarding Alicia in prison: You're right, the show will not quite go there; this isn't Orange Is The New Black. But just for synchronicity's sake, it will play with it at least for a bit.
