Cologne was like all of Germany's larger cities heavily bombed in WW II, and like most of them the reconstruction isn't quite up to the pre WW II original, but there ARE some gorgeous places to see. First and foremost the cathedral, of course, which is why I always go there even if I'm only changing trains at Cologne. On this occasion, I also had time for some of the old city centre and the Roman museum.

Yesterday I was in Cologne for another conference, and before I went back to Munich, I could pay homage to the cathedral. I mean, I'm biased and in favour of the Bamberg cathedral emotionally, but there is no question the Cologne one is one of the most majestic buildings we have. Check it out by daylight and at night:

A long day in the train makes for a weekly retrospective of various pleasant places I stopped by these last few days. You've already see my photos of Trier; below are pictures of Mayen, a small town in the Eiffel area, and of the Cologne cathedral. (Because you can't stop by Cologne, even if it's just to switch trains at one of the biggest central stations, without allowing yourself a glimpse of the cathedral. Well, you can't if you're me. :)
