Fanon Meme

So, I aquired the OT on DVD today, and I suppose it says something about my priorities within the Star Wars universe that first I went to the bonus material and played that featurette about Episode III, featuring teasing glimpses of Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen practicising the big duel, and Anakin getting Vader-ized. Then I watched the audio commentary version of Star Wars, Episode IV: A New Hope, or just plain SW to you and me. More on that next weekend, when the reliable internet connection private time Force will be with me once more.

Till then, I'll do this meme of [livejournal.com profile] alara_r's and [livejournal.com profile] hobsonphile's. Multifandom-wise.

Fanons you like:

- Padme kept that trinket Anakin carved for her in The Phantom Menace. Wait, that's not fanon anymore, because she wears it in one Episode III photo. (Can you tell I'm in a SW kind of mind right now?)

- Snape was in love with Lily Potter: I find the idea quite plausible, and there are some good fanfics using it. I'm sure there are also some awful ones, but I haven't read that much HP anyway.

- the between trilogies backstory [livejournal.com profile] fernwithy created for Anakin/Vader and Leia; I have no idea whether this counts as fanon, but I've seen at least two other writers use it, so I guess it might

- Delenn loved Lennier as well as Sheridan and reunited with him after SiL ([livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge convinced me months ago)

- Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr were lovers; mind you, they don't have to be for me to enjoy the story, I just think it's a highly plausible interpretation within the X-Men movieverse

- Jean Grey has a sort of divorced parents relationship with both of them: does this count as fanon, [livejournal.com profile] artaxastra and [livejournal.com profile] penknife?

- and, of course: Londo/G'Kar. As with Xavier/Magneto, the great thing here is that the issues, the intensity and the amazing emotional journey in canon is there whether or not you add a sexual dimension. I'm just rooting for middle-aged folk to get equal treatment with the pretty young things in fannish treatment here, and apparently, the rooting has had effects.*g*

Fanons you hate:

- Saint!Obi and Slut!Obi; both are equally annoying

- while we're at it, Saint!Spike and Saint!Methos

- an old HL fanon, by now hopefully extinct: Cassandra as a bloodthirsty psychopath slaughtering and torturing people left and right to revenge herself on Methos, until he or MacLeod or both behead her

- grovelling Buffy begging forgiveness from Spike/Angel/Xander/Giles/whomever: no way.

- Alfred Bester, torturer at large: fanfics which have Bester torture one or several of our heroes simply because the author needs angst and he's a villain tick me off to no end. Motivations, people. Look them up.

I'd add Slut!Marcus, but I honestly don't care enough about the character one way or the other.

Fanons or fanfic trends you started or popularized:

- Londo/G'Kar. After moaning for a decade about the lack of (gen) fanfic about the two, I finally did something productive about my woe and wrote a (gen) story. This put me into contact with [livejournal.com profile] hobsonphile. A bit earlier, I had discovered [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge who had made a remark about the complete lack of Londo/G'Kar in the fanfic world in her lj. Fast forward several weeks and an lj for Hobs and some jokes later, and an evil, tentacle-porn-shaped idea was born. It still took me some more months to have the guts to actually write the first Londo/G'Kar slash, but I do claim the honour of having done the pioneer deed. Oh, and I bullied [livejournal.com profile] andrastewhite into watching B5, which in turn gave B5 fandom one of my favourite fanfic writers.

Fanons of your own you wish other people would steal more often:

- Quark/Dax. As in, it's canon he loved her, and why should Odo get all the angst and action?

- Londo/G'Kar. Because there can't be enough tentacle porn.

- The Centauri population does not consist only of the nobility. Let's explore the rest of the race as well.

Well, I'm not the world's biggest prequel fan myself, but I'll probably watch the ROTS preview first, too. And then Empire of Dreams. Because I haven't SEEN them all before. Brand new stuff first, always. I have no patience.

Saw Empire of Dreams, can recommend it. It's a tad uncritical, to put it mildly, but otherwise very good in getting the daily grinding of filming and various obstacles etc. across, and the spirit of the 70s. Also, Lucas' closing remark that he started out as Luke and ended up as Vader makes me smile.

I am so torn about <i>Empire of Dreams</i>...

I'm very interested in learning the information from the documentary on the one hand, but on the other, I have always steered clear of Star Wars behind-the-scenes footage, worrying that seeing it would ruin the magic for me. It's one thing to willingly suspend disbelief, another to do so once you already have seen the footage of the director, crew, etc., standing near the actors. These films have always been so sacred to me that I'm worried that seeing the documentary might make them lose their luster for me. On the other other hand, though, I've heard great things about Empire of Dreams and am very, very curious.

Besides that, I can't wait for my boxed set to arrive from Amazon! All three original films in new, pristine glory preserved forever on DVD...Squee!!!
From: [identity profile] selenak.livejournal.com
I think you'll appreciate the magic all the more. Plus the auditioning tapes are to die for. (Kurt Russel as Han Solo, William Katt as Luke, Terri Nunn as Leia...)

Interesting...

Also, Lucas' closing remark that he started out as Luke and ended up as Vader makes me smile.

That is in keeping with an answer Lucas gave in EW this week as to what order he would hope future generations would watch the Star Wars series, and he said that he would like people to begin with Episode I, not Episode IV, even though the current generation saw them the other way around. The fact that Darth Vader is Anakin Skywalker is then no longer the twist, in Lucas' eyes, but figuring out how the situation at the end of Episode III turned into the start of Episode IV. For example, future generations will see Leia at the start, and instantly see the dramatic irony that Leia does not know that she is being captured by her father, and so on and so forth.

I wonder if Lucas' shift from seeing Luke as the protagonist of the series, and the one who he most identifies with, to Anakin/Vader being the protagonist of the greater arc, affected his statement about the intended order of the films. I also wonder whether this is a reflection of his maturity versus his relative youth when he first began filming the series and, if he had begun the series today, at his current age, whether he would have chosen to tell the story in order from the get-go.

I think age probably has a lot to do with it. Youth and rebellion are classic subjects of great emotional appeal. And in that version, the other side, the forces of authority, are just evil and have to be overcome and destroyed. Part of why I find the prequels so interesting is that the narrative frame here, both the political and the personal, are infinitely tricker - a breakdown, and while the coming Empire is clearly bad, the Republic is in such a marode shape that you understand why people (read: Anakin) lost faith with it. There are no such thing as a perfect good choice, not until idealism in the form of Luke and Leia gets reborn, there are only a couple of bad choices. It's a very adult state. Ask Angel.

Probably because he isn't on any of the well-known blog sites, Andrew Rilstone's very interesting ideas about Luke and Anakin as dual protagonists of the Star Wars double trilogy aren't very well-known. Go here, (http://www.aslan.demon.co.uk/arts.htm) and read the "Little Orphan Anakin" essays in sequence (the same numbering sequence as the relaease of the movies.)

Absolutely. The station is full of them, but we never hear much about the vast range between the VIPs and the occasional dancing-girl.

Ah, thanks for this one. I couldn't be more of a Spuffy 'shipper, but basically all of my scenarios for their reunion start with Buffy punching him in the face. ("Here's for trying to tell me what I mean when I say I love you! And here's for not telling me you're alive!")

I'm an unabashed fan of "The Girl in Question," but I'd still like to see what Jane E. would have done with that script. (pauses to a fantasize about a project in which various ex-Buffyverse scribes write their versions of addressing the Buffy question, either with the girl in question or without her).

On rewatching "The Prom" and "Into the Woods" recently, I can't get over how often the men in Buffy's life take it on themselves to explain to her what she means when she says she loves them.

and since your original post was about "Star Wars," have we talked about the relation between Spike & Han Solo's reactions to the "now-that-you're-dying-I-love-you" from their girls?

You know, this would be a great fanfic challenge: write it in the style of Jane/Marti/Joss/David Fury/whomever. No bashing of said author.

Heck, even Giles does this, sort of, when he tells her she's relying on him too much and that he has to leave her for her sake. No wonder that she shies away from the phrase.

Han: No, you don't, but it's nice of you to say so. Now go!
Leia: Why, you... *she grabs Vader's light saber and throws into Han's general direction. This completely ruins the freezing effect but gives him a weapon he absolutely can't handle. Mayhem ensues.

Spike: I know.
Buffy: What do you mean, you KNOW? You've been wrong about this stuff before. Arrogant bastard.
*She knocks him unconscious, leaves the still glowing amulet behind and carries Spike away. Whether they can still escape the destruction is open to debate. In any case, more mayhem ensues.

*giggle* -- you are so funny.

I had Buffy and Spike discuss these exit lines here (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1772562/5/), and Spike said:

Oh come on, Buffy. Harrison Ford is an all-out wanker. And you are much prettier than that Fisher bird. Please forgive me. I was sacrificing my un-life to save the world, I didn’t realize you were playing movie quotes.

Bloody hell, I didn't realise you did the first ever Londo/G'Kar. Did it really take that long after the series ended?

And Bester, torturer at large, ick. Yes, he has tortured people on screen, but it's always been for a purpose. He is certainly not the sort of loopy psychopath who would kidnap and torture someone Because He Can. This may be controversial, but I suspect that there is so much outrage over torture, for good reasons, that a lot of people think that anybody who does it must be a random sadist.

Yes, it did. And forget about the slash - in all the time between the end of the show and my gen story "Truth or Dare", I only found ONE story with Londo and G'Kar in the leads. One. About the two most interesting characters of the show. Otherwise it was floods of John/Delenn and Marcus/Ivanova, with a very little Lyta and Bester sprinkled in. Oh, and Susan/Talia and Garibaldi/Sinclair. But NO Londo or G'Kar or Londo & G'Kar or Londo/G'Kar stories. Clearly, this called for action.

He is certainly not the sort of loopy psychopath who would kidnap and torture someone Because He Can.

Exactly. On my aforementioned quest to find Londo fic, I stumbled upon a story in which he has a very small part. Guess what - he gets tortured by Bester (though the grand torture is reserved for Sheridan & Delenn). With no motives but Because He Can given. Really, if people absolutely want their characters tortured by a B5 canon character, I'm sure Mr. Sebastian would be available...

Nah, Seb just does exactly what the Vorlons tell him. Pretty much the only canon character of such inclinations who lasted more than one ep was Cartagia. I still love that story about Wertham Krimmer's guiding principle for Cartagia being that he had to be so horrible that Vir would be willing to have him murdered.

Love that story as well (though there is one other person Vir wants to see dead, and indeed is happy to see dead - Morden). And you're right. Cartagia it would have to be.

I thought this *was* canon, at least the first part? I mean, I certainly can't see anyone denying that Delenn really did love Lennier, after watching them together... especially when she's dealing with the fallout of her new relationship with Sheridan.

(I also thought that Lennier was supposed to have died between Objects and Rest and SiL, as well as Lyta, Londo and G'Kar, though)

It's the interpretation that makes the most sense to me, especially for Delenn's season 5 attitude towards Lennier, but from what view Sheridan/Delenn fics I read, it doesn't seem to be regarded as canon. Hence the "fanon".

Lennier dead: the fact Delenn names him as her toast when all the others named are dead as well points to it, but she doesn't directly say he's dead, and she could have just been unclear about his fate since decades and missing him.

There's obviously more ambiguity on this one than I had realised. But, for what it's worth, this post by JMS suggests to me that he's at least not arguing that Lennier is still alive by SiL. Not that it's terribly important.

And it's interesting that not everyone saw the Delenn/Lennier thing. I suppose it makes sense that the manic J/D shippers would be the ones to see it differently. But I *definitely* think JMS intended us to believe that. Still, I can see why you're listing it as fanon.
