Catching up on „Star Trek: Picard“
Mar. 7th, 2020 11:35 amIn all haste, re: the last three (I think? ) episodes of Star Trek: Picard:
- Agnes Jurati showing up just after the Romulan attack on Picard‘s house was a big giveway that she was a mole, and then I read Una McCormack‘s novel The Last Best Hope (the story of Picard Romulan evacuation mission, co-starring Raffi and also introducing child!Elnor, with a subplot re: Maddox and Agnes Jurati), which also was somewhat obvious in this regard, so subsequent developments in this corner weren‘t surprising, alas; if anything, the latest flasback, showing Agnes changed her mind only after Commander Oh mindmelded with her, was, since I had assumed she‘d been a mole before that after reading the novel
- speaking of Elnor, so far a bit one note „literal Samurai“ though this changed in his scenes with Hugh (sob!), and I look forward to seeing him with Seven
- Seven of Nine: the episode was great, and so was her scene with Picard about post-Collective humanity; I note with approval not a single mention of Chakotay was made, and instead, we got the dastardly Gangster Girlfriend of yore
- we also got Icheb‘s death, which was heartrendering and totally sold me on Seven‘s revenge plot
- Raffi and her son: in a fandom where everyone and their adopted son have Daddy issues, except for Deanna Troi who has Lwaxana, this is a rare first of a dysfunctional mother/son relationship from the mother‘s pov (and of course in the same episode that started with Seven and her son
- I always used to be a bit torn about the very existence of Hugh; I, Hugh the episode was great, but Decent I + II were awful, and so in retrospect his arrival seemed to signal the start of the Borg overuse; so I was somewhat surprised of how much I went to mush inside whenever he appeared, first seen heading the Borg reclamation project in the scene with Soji, and then a few eps later reuniting with Picard; using your trauma to help others is the most Trekian thing ever in the optimistic sense and that hug was lovely
- So yes, woe was me when he died
- whereas the rest of the most recent episode was blatant hurt/comfort fanfic with a heavy emphasis on comfort, with the Imzadis, Troi and Riker, being lovely and just what the Doctor ordered; my inner TNG continuity fan noted with approval the name of Kestra (that‘s what Deanna‘s sister was called, whose death as a child was Lwaxana‘s hidden trauma), and the backstory of son Thad the dead language inventor managed not to feel like gratitious angst but like something that can happen even in an Utopia
- I must say, with no offense to anyone‘s acting skills, but I think you can tell that Patrick Stewart, Marina Sirtis and Jonathan Frakes really have those decades of (fond) history from the body language alone
- Soji still feels like a BSG type Cylon, and I wonder whether they‘ve agreed to pay their own comrade Ron Moore royalties
- Narek and his sister, complete with deliberate incesteous overtones, feel by contrast like someone‘s over the top TOS fanfic, and I‘d rather have Laris and friend as our ongoing Romulans, but accept drama needs conflict.

Oh, I'd forgotten about that! Thank you!

Yes.
This episode made me so happy.

The episode itself was like a good hug.
