Turns out I feel about the three seasons of Picard very much like I do about the Star Wars Sequel trilogy - i.e. I liked the middle installment best, and then the last part throws out everything l loved and/or appreciated about said middle installment as if it didn't happen, not coincidentally story elements, character development and twists that felt genuinenly innovative, in favour of doing a last season that to me feels like a mixture of DO NOT WANT, squeezing the nostalgia well dry and a very very few bits I did like. And ST: Picard doesn't have the excuse of switching storytellers between installments (at least I'm assuming Matalas is responsible for all three seasons?)l. This is of course why I haven't reviewed the last few episodes. I disliked what whas going on so much that I wouldn't have continued watching if this wasn't the last season.

A few more detailed observations, but not too many, because I like these characters and actors, and I don't feel well trashing something they've worked on:

Spoilers after writing this will now do a Terry Matalas and pretend a season of ST: Picard never happened, only in my case the last one )

While I loved last week's episode, this week I'm back to "on the one hand, on the other hand" in my feelings about this season. Unless something rapidly changes, that makes season 2 of Picard the best one imo, and definitely the one I emotionally connected to most.

But onto this particular episode: The Bounty )

Last season, one hears. I never fell in love with Picard the way I did with Discovery, and I do think it's the less original series, but I have enjoyed watching the first two seasons, and I will be very surprised should I not enjoy the third one as well.

More spoilery general and 3.1. musings ensue )

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 1.01.: Since I had really liked Discovery's version of Pike, Spock and what little we saw of Number One in season 2, I was looking forward to this, and the first episode did not disappoint. Incidentally, if there was one thing that could have kept me from watching, it's the annoying type of DISCO basher who was loundly anticipating "real" Trek. (These kind of utterings are what reliably keeps me from watching The Orville. Seriously, every time someone recs The Orville to me by dissing Discovery, by by now I love as much as my other favourite Trek tv shows, DS9 and TNG, they further ensure I will never watch it.) However, said annoying type of fan is not the fault of this latest show, plus I can report that not only was the pilot charming, but affectionate Discovery references were flying fast, and also, it did not escape me that Pike and Spock were the only men on the bridge of the Enterprise, plus the present day parallels to what was going on on the planet of the week were less than subtle and as firmly messaging as both Discovery and Picard are. (Which is a fine Trekian tradition. The shows don't always pull it off well, but they try.)

Given real life is a horror show on several continents right now, some reminders of the good sides of life can be useful to draw energy from. As, for example, the ongoing rediscovery of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel. Here's a beautiful song of hers, presented by two sopranos, celebrating the month of May:

And here's a fanfiction link, a Seven of Nine portrait covering both Voyager and Star Trek: Picard (so far):

Imo, this one and the previous one should have been a single episode. Each had good scenes but also filler scenes.

Well, that was possibly the most streaming-format affected episode of the series so far. It felt like half an episode, the first half of a two parter, not something that stands on its own.

Thank you, everyone who answered the poll.
That was certainly instructive! And I‘ll answer the replies, it‘s just that I‘m currently at a conference, and thus with very limited time and internet access. On to the ST: P review.

Dear Star Trek Holidays Writer,

thank you for enriching my year with a ST story. We evidently like some of the same corners in the Trekverse, and your time and trouble to write for me is much appreciated.

DNWs I have only a few. I don't like character bashing, by which I don't mean characters can't denigrate each other when it's ic and demanded by the plot that they do, I mean the type of narrative where every one and their tribble gangs up to tell the character the author dislikes the most how worthless they are.

This year, I've asked for ampersand rather than for romantic or sexual relationships. If you do want to turn one of the relationships romantic or sexual because they work better for that way, be my guest (unless it's family relationships on DS9 - there, please don't). But no PWPs, please.

Book canon: there are some novels I like, some I don't, and a lot more I haven't read. So I would prefer it if you used tv canon only as the basis for your story. Personal headcanon is of course welcome as long as the story itself explains it.

All the listed characters are on an "or" basis. You don't have to use them all at the same time, except in the Star Trek: Picard request.

On to my requested fandoms and characters.

The ficathon for Star Trek Fans: Star Trek Holidays is live!

Check out the 25 tales (and works of art) from various incarnations of Star Trek, two of which were written for me. I'm pleased as punch. Years and years without treats, and then, in this extremely dark year, an embarassment of riches in various ficathons. It really makes my life more joyful, and I'm glad to share the two latest presents I received:

Dear Creator,

thank you so much for writing this story for me. We clearly share some Trekian interests, and I'm thrilled to find out what you'll come up with.

Star Trek: Discovery )

If your own idea for the story doesn't fit any of the prompts, that's no problem: I love fictional surprises, too, and am very much looking forward to your story!
