And thus my picspams have finally caught up with the present (nearly). It's also the last post from Britain I'm likely to make on this journey, because tomorrow we have to get up rather early for our trip back to Germany (with a side tour to Canterbury). Reports about the last three days will hence come from home, though they'll be briefer - after all, time spent in book stores and the British Library (as right now) does not make for a narrative. *g* But back to the picspam:

Warwick Castle. I think.

Definitely made at Shakespeare's birthplace.

Anne Hathaway's cottage. Each time I think of Anne, that Joyce-Burgess pun sneaks itself in my mind ("whoever hath her Will, Anne hath a way"). It's like cheap music that way.

I once had a punt sink under me when somebody tried to climb into it, and was swept by the current under that very bridge, at which point I did think to shout "help", though it didn't sound very convincing even to me. But I managed to grab the end of one of the moored punts (pictured - well, possibly they've changed them in the past couple of decades) until someone came and hauled me out.

And I should be there tomorrow, though not in the river, I hope; I wish you were still there too.

Perish the thought. I'm using mine very own laptop, on which I'm transcribing 19th century stuff, though the BL's wi fi.

I am really enjoying your travelogue. I'm going to England for the first time next month, and these posts are helping to work me into a fever-pitch of excitement.

Amazingly brave of your dad to try punting and he looks a natural at it! Not one of the men in my family would even consider giving it a go - they are a distinctly unadventurous lot.

We did the tour of the Bodleian a few years ago and it is definitely worth it to see the place more fully.

Enjoy Canterbury and have a safe trip home.

Aww, your dad is adorable on that boat! Umm, punt. Is the punt the boat or the oar.

Anyway, great pictures. Kenilworth especially; you captured some wonderful shadows there.

The oar. Also, [Unknown site tag] admonishes me that it's totally different from the gondolieri business and I'm not to call it an oar, as it is a punt. Ahem.

The pole is just called a"pole". No special name, I'm afraid. I can say that you pole from different ends of the punt and with different ends as the bow, depending on if you learned in Oxford or Cambridge. In Cambridge you punt with the flat-topped section of the boat at the rear, and use the pole while standing on the flat-topped section.
