Recently, I browsed through this book in a store, when in the second foreword (not the one by Pterry, the next one) I came across a description of Neil Gaiman as "bearing a startling resemblance to Dr. Gaius Baltar of Battlestar Galactica fame in voice, looks and manner, only slightly less agitated". Hm, thought I, despite being a fan of Mr. G. and somewhat fond of Gaius B. this had not occured to me before, but on the other hand, let's check out the evidence:

Cousins? )

At the very least, I am now wondering about just where Neil Gaiman's story telling abilities come from. :)

Apropos, the other day I reread The Kindly Ones and The Wake, aka the conclusion of the Sandman saga, and found it as awesome and rich as ever. I'm also more affected by Lyta Hall than ever and wish I had the Lyta standalone The Furies by Mike Carey here, but [personal profile] monanotlisa has it. The Kindly Ones is as much, if not more, Lyta's tragedy as it is Morpheus'. Spoiler for a classic Greek tragedy, Sandman style, ensue. ) Lyta haunted me then - which resulted in my Angel/Sandman crossover, Ouroborous, where she and Connor collide and end up helping each other come to terms with their pasts and presents - and I find she still haunts me now.

I have reason to be nostalgic for the Jossverse today, so my fanfic recs reflect this.

Family Album, which [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce told me about, is a wonderful take on Connor and Angel post- Not Fade Away. (No spoilers for the comics, show canon only.) This is Connor with his different memories in his head, and the awkward, intense relationship with Angel, slowly working towards something normal.

The Absence of... is set post-You're Welcome and after a great prelude which gives us the reactions of Wesley & Co. to the news about Cordelia presents Cordy and Darla in the afterlife. One of the earliest AtS stories I wrote was a Cordelia and Darla (temporary, and enforced, of course!) team-up, which left me with a hankering of seeing more. This one is delicious, snarky, and written with great affection for both characters.

Lastly, a Heroes vid rec:

Devotion by [livejournal.com profile] lcsbanana is that rarity, a vid centring on the relationship between Nathan and Peter which takes their relationships with the other people in their lives into account - Angela, Heidi, Claire, Simon and Monty, Simone, even Claude and Hiro. It instantly advanced to my favourite Petrelli vid. Go and watch!

[livejournal.com profile] iamsab is going to hate me, as I watched Recovery. In which David Tennant gives a great and very moving performance as a brain-damaged (via an accident) man, and Sarah Parish is fabulous as his wife. I'm impressed by the script, too, because it doesn't prettify the subject by making Alan, D.T.'s character, into a lovable wise fool a la Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, or a paragorn of wit as the main character in Whose Life is it Anyway. Similarly, Tricia, his wife, is brave and loving, but she's not a überhuman saint, and you can see how the whole situation is eating at her, bringing her to a breakdown point. The note of hope on which the film ends feels earned, and it makes the point of what it is like to live with someone who can never be the same person as before and yet is of course that very man, a familiar stranger.

Aside from his brief role as Barty Crouch, Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, I hadn't seen David Tennant in anything but Dr. Who before, so of course I was impressed that he used none of his Doctorly physical and voice mannerisms. No fast-speed talking, glasses, or oral fixation; it's not just the beard that makes you not think "Doctor" when watching him for a minute. It's a performance utterly lacking in vanity, too; like I said, the script doesn't prettify the brain-damaged condition.

***

I've got a few plot bunnies whom I don't have the time to groom and feed right now, but who knows, they might just gestate over the next months and turn out as stories later anyway. One's a post-NFA road trip featuring Connor and Angel. (I know the road trip thing has been done, for Angel and Spike, and for Connor and Spike, and various other combinations, but I think I haven't come across Connor and Angel before.) This would be a scenario in which Connor, who is famously bad in doing what Angel tells him, shows up somewhat belated at the NFA showdown anyway, which is about the only thing that could Angel do the utterly unheroic and unsuicidal thing of calling it quits and running (because he doesn't want to get Connor killed). One or the other might use a taser to knock someone out and drag him away. Also, the Senior Partners, being the SPs, would indulge in a little tit for tat and Angel tormenting by killing the Rileys while this all happens. All of which is just the backstory for the road trip, which carries new resentment as a baggage (Connor cost Angel his heroic last stand, and Angel is responsible for another set of dead parents), but also, as road trip stories are wont to do, the possibility to heal.

And you know there is going to be karaoke at some point.

The other plot bunny is an Astonishing X-Men one, but I won't be able to write it before the current arc is finished anyway, as I need to know how it turns out first. Let's just say the last issue, which offered several instances of Hank McCoy/Agent Brand bickering, somehow gave me the wish to write them as a messed-up pairing. (Do I write any other kind?) ("He is a genius mutant who looks like a giant cat and isn't in his usual genial state due to recent experiences, but has always been a person with strong ethics. She's a smart and really ruthless goverment agent who has no problem using mutants as lab rats if she thinks it'll save the earth and might just like girls better anyway. Theirloveismeanttobe!")

Found via Luminosity: a fantastic new AtS vid:

Runner

A Connor portrait through his relationships with his fathers, all of them. It's one of those things where you think "and here I wrote long essays explaining why I love the character, when I could just point people to this vid..."

From [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce and other people on my list: that meme in which you post the first sentence of the first story you posted each month this year:

Under the cut )

Conclusions to be drawn from the above: the first half of the year was mostly about Alias (which seems to be The Arvin Sloane Show, co-starring Jack and Sydney Bristow) and the second about shiny space shows and crossovers, with Darla and her son generously mixed in both parts as evidence of my continuing love for the Jossverse. Also, the only pairing I wrote text rather than subtext for is one of the most disliked in canon. Figures.

On that note, I present first a Darla ficlet (backstory, no spoilers, set early during the Restoration) :

Dancing Lesson )

Secondly, a Connor ficlet (Spoilers up to Slouching Towards Bethlehem in s4), which I am tempted to call "Hair Care", except I can't, right? I'm open to suggestions, though.

In case anyone is waiting for a BSG review, I did like the last episode but will not review until I've seen the second part.

Now, [livejournal.com profile] penknife has taken over [livejournal.com profile] idol_reflection and wants essays. Last year I had fun writing my Londo Mollari essay for said community, and upon checking what has been written since, I see two of my people are yet unclaimed. Plus [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 has claimed Jack Bristow, Irina Derevko and Nadia Santos from Alias. Does this practically demand an Arvin Sloane essay? Yes, it does. Did I already make preliminary studies for one? Yes, I did. Do I have the time for a full essay? No, I don't. And then there is Connor. I already wrote my essay of Connor love, and maybe I could just revise it somewhat to fit with the [livejournal.com profile] idol_reflection format? But shouldn't those essays be originals? Grrr, argh.

Plus [livejournal.com profile] penknife points out the lack of Trek character love, and this just awakens the Trekker within, and shouldn't I write a Quark essay?

Note to self: think of Darth Real Life. Seriously. You don't have time for this. I mean it. Even if you could use your Connor essay as a basis, the Sloane and Quark essays would require rewatching several key episodes, and what do you mean, that's not a trial? Real Life.

In other fannish news, [livejournal.com profile] carly_sullivan wrote a great story about Garibaldi and Londo for me in the B5 Friendship Ficathon: Truth, Belief and Second Chances.

One advantage of travelling through Northern Germany in relentless rain: one gets to finally write a long-due story. This one is for [livejournal.com profile] karabair who asked for it a while ago. Unbeta'd - I really have to get all those recent ficlets beta'd so I can post them at my accounts.

Timeline: Season 5, Post-Origin (in fact, post- Time Bomb), pre-Not Fade Away.
Summary: Wesley encounters Connor.
Working Title: Debts

You know, originally today's entry was supposed to be about Scar, the latest BSG ep (which I liked; more about it in another post), but then I found [livejournal.com profile] pearl_o suggesting a "Five Kisses" meme Now, which pairing do you think this inspired me to write? Hint: it's the one one that must be the most unpopular of the Jossverse. No, not Willow/Kennedy. The (canon) pairing I mean is one we weren't actually meant to root for, but see as Bad Wrong Leading To Terrible Things, and not in a season 6 Buffy/Spike manner. Because I am perverse that way. I let other people write about the sexy pairings and go for the tragic mess. Further hint: it's also what came to mind when [livejournal.com profile] karabair issued a "get Cordy laid" challenge a few days ago, and why I won't participate in said challenge. (Can't imagine anyone actually requesting this.) By which you can deduce Cordelia is one half of it. [livejournal.com profile] thalia_seawood, you're not allowed to read. This one has spoilers.

So, without further ado:

A postscript to my Connor essay, in the form of recs and links for interested parties.

Fanfiction:

On the Education of a Young Man by [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 has to be one of the earliest stories written about Connor. With only three episodes of background to draw on for teenage Connor, written and set between seasons 3 and 4, it was by necessity jossed in some points (i.e. Connor not being with Justine, for example), but still upholds very well. Excellent take on what Connor's childhood with Holtz must have been like.

Them Bones basically founded my favourite little subgenre in the very little corner of Connor fanfiction: Connor meeting the ghost of his mother. An elegant story by [livejournal.com profile] viola_dreamwalk, set and written in early season 4, i.e. before this meeting actually took place in canon.

She later, in season 5, tackled a ghostly encounter between Darla and Connor again, which is not connected to the earlier story and offers an interesting counterpoint interpretation: Soothe the Burn.

Also set in season 5 (post-Damage, most definitely pre-Origin) and written by the one and only Kita is Manus, in which Angel broods on Connor, Spike, and, in Kita's words, "women who haunt him, and blue eyed boys who spit venom at him. Who crawl into bed with their mothers, take from him all the women Angel has loved, and only begrudge Angel respect while he beats the life out of them".

And lastly, a very creepy and yet oddly touching AU in which Jasmine reigns and her thrall was never broken, Pentecost, by Doyle. Be warned, while there is nothing explicit, there is emotional incest all over the place.

Icons:

The newest bunch I discovered to my delight is here, and the one I'm using is an example.

Vids:

Alas, I can't find my favourite Connor vid online anymore, which used the song "Anticipate". However, there are plenty more:

Counting Bodies offers the unholy family, Angel, Connor and Darla all at once. Love the black and white, the colour red creeping in, and the connections drawn between the characters.

Also a family vid, by [livejournal.com profile] yhlee, and in fact the one I mentioned in my essay: Fighting It. This one also uses plenty of Wesley, which is only right as you could say he and Connor were each other's misfortune.

Zero is a great Connor character study, and has been amply reviewed here for all the important point it makes about Connor, Angel, Jasmine etc., so let me praise it for the shallow Vinnie = Pretty reason as well.

Lastly, mine own oeuvres. Fanfiction, since I can't make icons or vids:

The Haunting, Hunted Kind was my own contribution to the ghostly genre mentioned earlier, though I hope I came up with a twist - Darla is the one haunted, in fact. Consider it my fictional love declaration to Darla and Connor, my favourite AtS characters.

Doubt was a challenge reply I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse; Connor post-Inside Out in season 4.

Word Made Flesh was my take on Jasmine, and hence deals a lot with Connor as well.

Ouroboros, set post season 5, is the longest thing I've written on the subject of Connor so far and is a Sandman crossover. Lyta Hall with her lost son, her own guilt and her connection to the Furies, avengers of kindslaying, was just bound to meet Connor Riley.

ETA: I found the vid Anticipate!

If you've got friends on your flist who watch shows you love for the first time, you get into rewatching. If you have friends who want fanfic from you, even more so. [livejournal.com profile] karabair wants me to write a Connor and Wesley post-Origin, pre-NFA-story, after I made the mistake of mentioning the idea to her, and I probably will. (I'll also probably do a big post of character love for Connor - as written and played on the show, just to make things clear - as [livejournal.com profile] hobsonphile has been wondering what I see in him, and my answer probably wasn't enough.)

In the meantime, thoughts upon rewatching some Angel episodes. For some reason, I started with Are you now or have you ever been...? in season 2, which I think manages to be a splendid stand alone and a continuity heavy ep at the same time. Also, Tim Minear deals way better with MacCarthyism than he does with the Nazis in Hero, so even if I hadn't loved him already for his flashback episodes at that point, I would have for this one.

Cut for spoilers for Thalia' s benefit )
