Day 22 - Favorite Trek Film
Used to be Wrath of Khan for many a year, but I've gone off it not due to the film getting retrospectively worse but due to the unintended near disastrous effect it had by so many later incarnations of Trek (not just Abrams in not one, not two, but three reboot movies) trying to replicate it, or parts of it. And "evil vengeance driven foe versus captain" as a plot premise is actually not my idea of what Star Trek is all about, and the pseudo Khan villains are just not very interesting. So while I'm still very fond of WoK - Saavik! Actually tackling the theme of aging, via the leading man, no less! -, I no longer love it best.
First Contact, aka the only TNG movie I truly love, echoes parts of Khan as well in that Patrick Stewart gets to quote Moby Dick just as Ricardo Montalban did and vengeance is a theme (to be rejected), but thankfully leaves it at a homage nod rather than trying to go for the same plot structure. Jonathan Frakes does a great job at directing and the script manages to be accessible to TNG fans and relative newbies alike. Upon first viewing it, I was a bit disgruntled that Lily, wonderfully played by Alfre Woodward, basically gets the scenes Beverly Crusher would have had in the show (talking sense into Jean-Luc), but since then, I've been reconciled to it, not least because sometimes an outsider does get through best in such a situation. (My other problem with First Contact is that the concept of a Borg Queen not only goes against the original premise of the Borg but also makes one wonder what they needed Locutus for, but again: within the movie, it works, and also, Janeway getting to duel with a Queen later in Voyager also makes it worth it.) First Contact does scores with the suspense (my money for most nailbiting scene is still the sequence in outer space with Picard, Worf and the ill fated Hawke) as well as with the humor ("this is not the time to talk about time! We don't have the time!") and the character stuff (obviously, Picard's Borg issues, but also things like his - and the other character's wonder and joy when first standing next to the original Phoenix). However, since it is pretty dark, I have to be in the right mood to watch it. Which leads me to:
Voyage Home, aka The One With The Whales, is just fun, never stops being fun, is endlessly quotable, and offers good scenes for everyone except poor Sulu (in his memoirs, George Takei is still not over his sequence with the small boy meant to be his ancestor failing because the kid just wouldn't cooporate during shooting). The guest star is immensely likeable, and the save-the-whales message, sadly, more needed than ever. Lastly: lo and behold, this is a movie without a villain (other than human stupidity and carelessness with the environment), and it scored with the wide audience, not just the hardcore Trekkers. How come no one tried to imitate this, instead of Wrath of Khan?

Date: 2019-09-10 10:09 am (UTC)Having avoided the second AOS movie, I'm still good with Wrath of Khan - it's very unlike the rest of Star Trek, but that's why I enjoy it in the context of the whole series.

Date: 2019-09-14 09:33 am (UTC)Phrases like "Now would be a good time, Scotty" and "Everyone remember where we parked" seem to be still in general use.
My favourite too, though the use of a one-off girl friend for Kirk was a bit annoying.
