1.) Benjamin Linus (Lost). What Ben does is perhaps best described at "surviving via mindgames and manipulation" with a sideline of "don't be afraid to get yourself beaten up now and then and be in a seemingly powerless possession, it makes people even better to manipulate". You could argue that Jacob and Smokey are even better at this, but I ask you back: who's still around by the time the show ends? Huh? I rest my case.

2.) Xena (Xena: Warrior Princess). There have been female warriors before and since, but I'd still put Xena against anyone else, male or female, in martial combat. (Not that I don't say "strategy" or "long term survival".) How did that great nonsense verse go... "You've not lived till you've been gored/By Xena". *hums melody from The Bitter Suite*

3.) Natasha Romanov(a) (The Avengers). Best spy of them all, clearly. Someone should write the crossover where she and Ben match mindgame and pretending-to-be-powerless-using-real-emotions-to-trick-enemy skills, but it won't be me. In my fanon, there's just one thing Judi Dench!M really can't forgive Nick Fury for, and that's for making Natasha an offer Natasha couldn't refuse before she could.

4.) Havelock Vetinari (Discworld). Best benevolent tyrant ever (except if you're a mime). As opposed to many a competent power player, he doesn't even seem to have their Achilles heel, i.e. not allowing any other competent people to rise, thereby creating a lack of goverment competence once they've shovelled off the mortal coil. (*looking at you, Bismarck*) It's point of discussion whether the Patrician is grooming Moist or Carrot as his successor, but either one would not do a bad job.

5.) Kalinda Sharma (The Good Wife). Might or might not be the world's best P.I., but is definitely the best one in the show's Chicago. If I needed either dirt to be dug up or my innocence proved, Kalinda is the Private Investigator I'd hire. If I could afford her, that is.

I have the feeling I did this once before, but no time to check, plus what the hell, it's always fun to rave about the women. Qualification: I'm choosing to interpret as referring to females who can do the kicking of the aforementioned backside both literally and figuratively. So ladies who could rule the universe by force of personality, cleverness and manipulative skills like Laura Roslin or Livia Drusilla won't show up; they're in a class of their own.

1) Abigail Brand (originally Astonishing X-Men, now Marvelverse at large). See icon. Green-haired, tough, abrasive, willing to put her life on the line along with everyone else's, with a gift for sarcasm and (so far) great taste in men. Has even mastered the art of admitting of having been wrong and drawing consequences, which is rare in ruthless types. I love her quite a lot.

2) River Song (Doctor Who). Was interesting in her first outing which due to timey-wimeyness was also her end, and became downright fascinating in the last season when we got to know her better; can wear space suits, uniform and evening wardrobe with the same aplomb and is played by the vibrant Alex Kingston. "Hello, Sweetie" will never sound the same again. :)

3.) Sarah Connor (The Sarah Connor Chronicles and the first two Terminator films). Transforming herself from hunted teenage waitress to warrior woman, Sarah picked up a lot of intimacy issues on the way, not to mention poetic if disturbing dreams. I love that she loves stories, which is rare in an action heroine, that she bonds with strangers but has difficulties with her nearest and dearest, and that she tries not just to win a fight but to do so without losing sight of what she fights for. Oh, Sarah.

4.) Ellen Ripley (Alien and subsequent sequels). Like Sarah, Ripley didn't start out as a warrior. She was the space equivalent of a trucker, and one of several reasons why I'm in the minority who prefers Alien over Aliens is that the crew of the Nostromo strikes me as much more real - they aren't marines who banter in movie speak, they are people doing their jobs who have been together far too long. (Also, more British actors.) And it's far from obvious or signaled that Ripley will be the one to survive. But survive she does, and while her life becomes one out of time nightmare in which she keeps being reborn, she never loses her humanity. I ♥ Ripley.

5.) Xena (Xena: Warrior Princess). Actually, most of the women of that show, but Xena is in a class of her own. Cheerfully anachronistic as her show was, she did the dark-haired brooding former villain seeking redemption stick before Angel and various imitations of same, and she did it (more often than not) better. Lucy Lawless gave her a fierce joy in fighting that ex-villains not often get to display, a deadpan sense of humour and a confident sexuality.

YouTube is still my friend and yielded some amazing Beatles cover versions, some of which I hadn’t known existed (Aretha Franklin did way more Lennon/McCartney than I had assumed, wow); others I had been looking for since eons. Also one amusing crossover I had forgotten (Joe LoDuca actually used We can work it out on Xena for Xena and Gabrielle).

Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Ray Charles and other luminaries covering Beatles songs, plus background notes & quotes )

[personal profile] trobadora has started a rewatch of Xena: Warrior Princess, and I know I have some old Xena fans on my flist, so check out her posts, here and here. Thinking back, I conclude I enjoyed Xena for similar reasons I like Merlin today. Both shows are cheerfully anachronistic and unabashedly cheesy at times, but they also, for the most part, sell me on the emotional truth of the characters and their relationships, and they can go from silly to tragic and back within an episode.

Also Xena had Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor and Kevin Smith (the other one) and the great New Zealand landscape and Karl Urban doing double duty as Cupid and Caesar. What's not to love?

Assemble a super team from your favorite films, TV shows, books etc. Your team must consist of the following: Team Leader, Warrior, Smartypants, Hottie, Comic Relief. You may not use more than one character from each source.

I'm going with an all-female team:

Team Leader: Laura Roslin (BSG). She'd be soft spoken, smart and entirely lethal if necessary. Proven leadership skills, and the ability to get the group she leads through almost any crisis.

Warrior: Aeryn Sun (Farscape). Not only is she an excellent fighter and trained to function in a team; she would not go for the top spot herself.

Smartypants: Jadzia Dax (ST: DS9). Dax is several hundred years old, clever, and tolerant without being patronizing or too accepting. What's more, she would make an excellent confidante-plus-challenge for Laura, not afraid to point out when she thinks Laura is wrong but without doing so in front of the team. As with Aeryn, she doesn't have leadership ambitions herself.

Hottie: Emma Frost (X-Men comicverse). As she's absolutely unembarassed to tell anyone, Emma paid a lot of money to look as gorgeous as she does, and uses that if she has to, but more importantly, her telepathy and fighting skills are useful in any team, and her sarcastic wit would keep everyone on their toes. I predict regular Aeryn/Emma clashes, with odd moments of empathy interspersed as they're both in love with broken boyscouts. Oh, and there'd definitely be slashy tension.

Comic Relief: Gabrielle (Xena: Warrior Princess). Gabrielle started out as a sidekick and ended up as the heroine of the show, but she also ended up widowed, so to speak, so she needs a new job. Everyone would be bound to underestimate her at first, due to her tendency to babble (hence the comic relief assignment), which can be useful. Also, she has strong ethics, and is passionate about them, which with Laura and Emma in the team is necessary.

My Easter post was already made yesterday, so my continuing quest to stay free of Dr. Who spoilers until some well-meaning person, British, German or otherwise, enables the addict by ahem'ing 2.1 and handing it over is my very first poll. Because for some reason Easter with my family makes me think meta fandom thoughts, when combined with remarks like [livejournal.com profile] londonkds's recent review of City on the Edge of Forever (the Blake's 7 one, not the Star Trek one): "with Vila getting the equivalent of Sic Transit Vir or The Zeppo", he wrote. Which reminded me, not for the first time, there are certain types of episode most shows do - the bodyswap episode, the hostage episode, the canon AU "what if?" episode, etc. Hence, poll.
