List 5 fictional doctors you'd want treating you. (Or not.)

Want:

Dr. Martha Jones (DW): competent, smart, friendly, gorgeous. Great storyteller. There's no downside there!

Dr. Julian Bashir (ST: DS9): also competent, friendly and gorgeous, and interested in literature. It doesn't have to be all high brow conversation, though; we could discuss favourite Bonds.

Do not want:

Dr. Cottle (BSG). I love Cottle and his snark on my tv screen, but in real life, the chain smoking would be too much for me.

Dr. Owen Harper (TW). Owen is another case of "fascinating to watch, do not want near me in real life". Just because he was my favourite character while he was on the show doesn't mean I'd let him treat me.

Dr. Gregory House (House). Yes, he'd diagnose what was wrong with me, but only after various traumatizing wrong guesses, and I really don't want to be held up as an example to lecture his staff on their personal lives.

In other news, I woke up to discover Glenn Beck has finally listened to the lyrics of Born In The USA. It's taken him only 26 years, but hey, it's more than Ronald Reagan ever did. [personal profile] jesuswasbatman, what was the British example of a conservative declaring love for a song/singer while ignoring the lyrics again?

Last night's House episode was fabulous and my favourite in a long, long time. Earlier this year they did a Wilson-centric one which was basically the show if Wilson were the main character, and that was okay. This time, it was Cuddy's turn, and it was fantastic. Why the difference? (Err, in my personal perception.) Because while Wilson (like House) gives me the impression of moving in his personal hamster wheel and has done for years, and thus his episode felt like same old to me, Cuddy last and this season has actually moved on and created something new with her life. And so this most likely only episode of Cuddy: The Show - a day in the life of a beleagered hospital administrator who pawns insurance companies, stealing employees, annoying doctors and boasting boyfriends alike - we're going to get felt fresh. Lisa Edelstein was in very single scene, as we never left Cuddy's pov, and rocked the hell out of them. I'm so filled with love right now.

Since we're talking fabulous women, here are some links from halfamoon:

Marvel Comics:

In the breakdown lane: Maria Hill. I so love the way the last two years have moved Maria Hill from a not too fleshed out plot device to one fantastic and important character, to the point where her scenes are my favourites Matt Fraction's current Iron Man run. This story gives us an excellent look at her.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles:

I will follow: a Savannah Weaver vid, exploring her relationships with John Henry and with Catherine Weaver. Reminding me how much I loved the other dysfunctional family in that 'verse. Damn you, Fox!

Gone With The Wind:

Sisters: a Melanie vignette. The older I get, the more I tend to conclude the relationship between Scarlett and Melanie is my favourite thing about GWTW, and this story delivers Melanie's pov on it.

Multifandom:

Five awesome non English-speaking ladies: because there are stories, shows, movies and books that did not take their origin in an English-speaking country, and a lot of them have great female characters as well. I'm delighted this presentation includes Yagmur of Türkisch für Anfänger.

Fannish5: Name 5 characters who should be fired from their jobs.

1.) Jocasta Nu (Star Wars prequels). Seriously, a librarian who says something like "if it's not in our index, it doesn't exist" should be fired; a true librarian would be curious as hell and determined to track down that elusive system.

2.) Erik Foreman (House). For firing Thirteen due to their personal relationship, which so counts as sexual harassment and/or discrimination. That Thirteen is back on the team isn't due to him. Of course, he's not the only guy at this particular hospital who should be sacked, which brings me to...

3). Gregory House (House). Yes, he's brilliant, but he's also a walking invitation to a lawsuit, and the fact the show only played the lawsuit subplot twice in six years shows you how unrealistic it is. Also, evidentally the hospital was able to function and save lives while House was in rehab, so really: sacking him would be the most sensible thing for Cuddy to do.

4.) Severus Snape(Harry Potter). Great, complex character. One of my favourites of the books. Still a lousy, lousy teacher, and I don't mean just regarding Harry. (Here, we have the fun irony that Snape actually unintentionally managed to teach Harry pretty well via his old notes in Half Blood Prince and Harry admired the hell out of Snape when he didn't know it was Snape. Whereas his occlumency lessons were a mutual catastrophe.) Any teacher who scares the living hell out of a sweet guy like Neville Longbottom and makes crass jokes about a female student's teeth (Hermione in Goblet of Fire) really has no business teaching. Snape dislikes children. Children dislike Snape. Yes, Dumbledore wanted to keep him nearby for backstory reasons, but surely, some kind of potion research university job with living quarters in Hogwarts would have done the job and spared both countless students and Snape?

5.) Rupert Giles (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Not as a Watcher, as a librarian. Look, I love Giles, but clearly that school library was hardly ever used for the purpose it was supposed to be and for which Giles got paid. Do you remember how poor Jonathan was received when he interrupted a Scoobie gathering because he actually was looking for a book? Sorry, Giles. Snyder should have sacked you. I know he tried in vain, but he should have done so again.

Choose ten characters. What fandoms would they participate in, and in what ways?

1.) I already did a post on clearly both movieverse Magneto and Xavier being Doctor Who fans, complete with highly scientific poll as to which Doctors and which Companions they like best. Expanding on that, I'd say Erik Lehnsherr to this day argues Genesis of the Daleks with Charles online and and has dispatched Mystique to Simbabe to investigate those rumours that there are copies of the lost Second Doctor episodes there. He could only sell her on this by telling her she might as well kill Mugabe while she was in the country, but by all means had to retrieve the tapes.

2.) Severus Snape, growing up with a Muggle father as he did, had off course access to 70s and early 80s tv. You know what this means, don't you? Young Severus was a Blake's 7 fan. Only Lily knew, of course, because he'd never have confessed it to his Slytherin friends; he just used Avon's one liners to great effect without them recognizing the origin. He used to write Avon/Cally fanfic under a pseudonym for fanzines and then broke it off. During his time as a Death Eater, he was severely tempted to go after Chris Boucher for Gauda Prime, but the thought of Voldemort figuring out the reason held him back. Later, at Hogwarts, he came around to regarding Blake as a great finale. At least Avon didn't have to teach kids as a punishment.

3.) Arvin Sloane's secret vice, as opposed to the more obvious ones, are Andrew Llyod Webber musicals, especially The Phantom of the Opera. He has all kinds of recordings, went to see it every time he was in London for an Alliance meeting and when really depressed finds reading Erik/Christine OTP fanfic complete with Raoul bashing cheers him up to no end. He'd never write it, though. On the other hand, he nearly got into a flame war on the subject why older manipulative mentor types with a killing record might not be the ideal partner for young talented ingenues. The other person just couldn't see Erik did it all for Christine's own good and that she'd never become such a stellar soprano without him; and why should the occasional posing as her father be a bad thing?

4.) Darla was really into Wilkie Collins novels back in the 19th century and had a bet running with Angelus as to what the nature of Sir Percy's secret was, though her favourite of his novels wasn't The Woman in White, it was Armadale. In the 20th century, she discovered the film Theatre of Blood and thought it was a marvellous idea, very inspirational. Only instead of killing off critics by staging Shakespearean deaths, she celebrated her ongoing Collins fannishness by killing off critics who insisted that he just wrote cheap potboilers by staging Collins murders. Also prevented murders which really should have been allowed to succeed for everyone's good, like the death of blond Alan in Armadale, oh yes. Wilkie Collins' reputation with literature professors improved; his critics literally died away. Clearly, fandom is not powerless.

5.) Alex Drake was a big Professionals fan as a girl, read Bodie/Doyle slashfic though she didn't write it, and made character and relationship soundmixes. She also catches Martin Shaw on stage when she can. Well, she did when she was living in the present, that is. Since her trip to the past, she found she couldn't stand watching The Professionals on screen anymore, for some reason, and instead distracts herself by watching Dallas, annoying her teammates by predicting plot twists and reconciling them by inventing drinking games.

6.) Toshiko Sato was a big Battlestar Galactica (new) fan, creating some of the best vids in fandom and writing lengthy, thoughtful meta. She was secretly a Kara/Leoben shipper (secretely because she knew how screwed up that was, and so used another handle when talking about that ship), but her vids were either Roslin-centric or ensemble. She was tempted to ask Jack about the Final Five and how it all ended but in the end didn't, and died not knowing.

7.) Abigail Brand is familiar enough with Star Wars to get Hank's references and respond accordingly, but she's really a fan of the Alien franchise. Ripley was and is her idol. She has all editions of all four movies on dvd and Sigourney Weaver's autograph, though she claimed her geeky boyfriend wanted it. In her non-existant spare time, she writes furious posts in online forums as to why there shouldn't be a fifth one.

8.) John Connor actually tries to stay away from sci fi, but one day caught a BSG episode, and, well, it all ended with him arguing in Television Without Pity why Cylons were completely implausible but Boomer was screwed over as a character anyway and should have gotten a redemption arc. He'd never tell his mother but has a feeling Cameron knows.

9.) Martha Jones stays away from medical shows except House; she and Tom regularly mock the medicine during episodes, but they never miss one, and though Hugh Laurie's American accent still occasionally weirds her out - after all, she watched Blackadder as a girl - she has a huge crush on him. Sometimes she checks the internet for Shakespeare fanfic and never knows whether she's dissapointed or relieved that there don't appear any Shakespeare/Dark Lady stories available.

10.) Vince Matsuka is a big Star Trek fan, which isn't a secret, and mods a Kira/Odo shipping community, which is, since he always tells everyone he's just in it for the chance to get naked photos of the female actors. He also gets into regular flame wars with Kira/Dukat shippers and with someone with a goverment computer IP who wants the discussion to get back to whether the Enterprise could beat the Death Star, with the online handle of LemonLymon.

Two fanfic recs and one meta:

Torchwood:

(Not) the end of the world - as we knew it - post-Children of Earth ensemble story, or rather, a collection of drabbles about each of the characters, all capturing something essential. It's awesome.

Battlestar Galactica:

Bedtime Stories - five stories Kara Thrace told to Hera Agathan while babysitting. Great Kara voice, and the stories all highlight something different about her and the 'verse.

And now the meta:

House:
The Road To Mayfield - House character analysis detailing his development from early s2 to the s5 finale. Excellent work.

Back from Vienna last night, and the conference remained great, but now I feel frustrated because everyone else on the list seems to already have watched the new ST movie. Tonight, I hope. Unless the Aged Parents say otherwise - this is mother's day.

Meanwhile, there is a meme to catch up on as well.

Comment to this entry and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. You must then update your journal and answer the following questions:

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

[profile] hobsonphile gave me Dr. Remy Hadley, aka Thirteen, from House.

1) Do you like this character?

Yes. At first I was somewhat neutral (and also dissappointed that Amber, who had been my favourite, did not make the cut when House made his choice for the new ducklings - little did I know...), but I came to appreciate her. Some Thirteen moments, whether it was her playing a drug buyer (and being utterly convincing at it as opposed to the other ducklings), or her reply to Foreman's question whether she misses sex with women, are among my personal highlights of the show. I also find it very refreshing that she's a recurring female character who had no point has shown any inclination to be in love with or even just attracted to House.

2) What name(s) do you call this character?

Thirteen. Thinking of her as "Remy" or "Dr. Hadley" feels odd. It occurs to me I have several number-named characters I like - Seven on Voyager and Six on BSG are other examples.

3) What image/color do you associate with this character?

Raddle, for some reason.

4) What song do you associate with this character?

Smoke Baby

5) What blood-type do you think this character is?

They probably mentioned it in the hostage episode, but if so, I've forgotten.

6) Which character do you like to put this character with?

I like the relationship with Foreman right now, though it's a work in progress. But I must admit that Thirteen's reaction to events concerning Amber in the s4 finale (to put it as neutrally as possible) felt like a confirmation to me that they had more than just a rivalry going on between them, and were it not for the larger plot relevance of Amber/Wilson, I would have liked to see this explored.

Non-romantically, I wish we'd get more scenes with either her and Cuddy, and her and Cameron. See also: Thirteen being immune to House, and hence the possibility of her having conversations with other female characters that do not revolve around House. Though I am aware that with him being the central character, and the now not named Plainsborough, NJ, there are limits to how many of these are possible.

7) What would you want to say to this character?

I'd ask her to provide medical advice to my mother, who since over a year now has an ongoing problem with cramps between her neck and her left shoulder, which local doctors couldn't fix. What? She's a doctor, people.

8) What do you want to do with this character: shake hands, hug, or kiss?

Shake hands. She's very attractive, but not my type, and I usually don't hug strangers.

If you want to play, comment, and I will give you a character.

List your five favorite love triangles.

This is quite tricky, because "least favourite" is far easier. Love triangles so often aren't depicted well. Or not in a way that make them interesting to me. However, here are some I'm genuinenly fond of, even if, in the best tradition of love triangles, I cheat a little now and then - but hey, nobody defined the nature of the love in this question!

1) Elizabeth Swann/Will Turner/Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean): way to go, Disney. Back when CotBP hit the cinemas, I would not have predicted this particular triangle to a) exist and b) work for me, but it does, and here is why: all three participants have strong emotional relationships with each other, not just two of them with the third. When Jack in the third movie gives up his chance at immortality, he does it for the usual variety of motives (among which self interest is definitely one - he has rethought just what being captain of the Flying Dutchman would entail a lot in this film), but he doesn't do it either for Elizabeth or Will, he does it for both, because he cares for both of them. They, for their part, care for him. And if they started out seeing each other on pedestals (and not really knowing each other that well - mid-trilogy you could make a case for Jack knowing both a bit better than they know each other - ), these have crashed down by the time the trilogy wraps up, and yet the affection survived and grew stronger. This is one fandom where I can definitely see an OT3 as canon.

2) John Locke/The Island/ Benjamin Linus (Lost): WHAT? I defy you to deny this does involve fanatical devotion and obsession, rivalry turning into something far more complicated, terrific chemistry and immensly watchable tv. (As opposed to the other triangle on that show which shall not be named.) My Lost 0T3 of great acting, manipulation, and scariness. *hearts*

3) Jack Bristow/ Sydney Bristow/ Irina Derevko in season 2 of Alias: like I said, the question doesn't say the love has to be romantic in nature. S2 of Alias had Sydney torn between her Spyparents, Irina busy trying to build a relationship with Sydney while messing with Jack (and discovering it hadn't all been business back in the day), and Jack sinking to lows (framing Irina early on) and rising to heights motivated by his feelings for both women. Also, there was family bonding via shooting, but what do you expect in a season that starts with a mother shooting her daughter for her own good? *hearts*

4) Gregory House/ James Wilson/ Lisa Cuddy (House): like I said in more than one review, this season just reaffirms the message from earlier seasons that any House/ just one person ship is doomed. (Leaving aside the House/Vicodin OTP problem.) He'll never be contend with either Wilson or Cuddy (or Stacy, or whoever). If he has Wilson, he'll pester Cuddy. And vice versa. Wilson and Cuddy, for their part, are genuinenly fond of each other and resigned to the fact they're unable to live without House in their lives. So clearly, OT3 is the only way to go, and right now, it looks like canon obliges.

5) Aeryn Sun/Talyn/Bialar Crais (Farscape): another parents and child triangle. Well, sort of. But Aeryn and Crais are Talyn's parents, no offense to Moya, who is Talyn's other mother. They're also former Peacekeepers, former enemies with all reasons in the world to hate each other, and understand each other a little more than is comfortable. In a two parter full of strong moments, my second favourite scene in Wolf in Sheep's Clothing (favourite will always be the John and Scorpius "so close" scene with John giving Scorpius the code) is Aeryn saying goodbye to Crais (and Talyn), with all their history, bad and good, between them, her hand on his cheek and that single gesture saying more than many words. And Talyn, oh, Talyn, you messed up teenager of a living ship, but with these parents, WHO WOULDN'T BE?

House

Cuddy and House meta Cuddy and House meta, spoilers up to the latest s5 episode. What she said!

The Pretender:

[livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2 is watching the show for the first time. I never was a passionate fan, but I enjoyed what episodes I saw and I did love Miss Parker. (No surprises there, if you know my character types.) So reading her reviews made me look for fanfiction again:

Heels: great Parker character portrait by drabble. No spoilers.

Roommates: a Buffy crossover in which we discover Miss Parker went to college with Jenny Calender. Lovely ironies abound. No spoiler for Pretender, definitely spoilers for the second season of BTVS.

Starved of Oxygen: Miss Parker and Jarod, the light side. Manages to be completely ic and yet give them a relaxed moment in between the usual Pretender angst. No spoilers beyond the basic set-up of the show.

The Distance That Keeps: Miss Parker, Jarod, and for that matter the rest of the ensemble: the dark side. This, by contrast, is darkfic of the purest oder. Has spoilers for all four seasons.

And lastly, no fandom:

An excellentJohn Simm interview, apropos a new historical miniseries, The Devil's Whore, which he's starring in. Also covers the rest of his career. There is a clip from the series - written by the same man who's responsible for Our Friends in the North, which is promising -, and the anecdote Simm tells about his son disguising himself as a Doctor Who character (not who you think) cracks me up.

An observation or two )

On to other fandoms:

Iron Man (and superhero films in general): Power and Accountability is a great essay, and the point made vis a vis the differences between this particular comics-to-movie transition in comparison to both the Spider-man and the Batman franchise is a great one.

Battlestar Galactica:

There are songs I connect to specific vids, and so a vid using the same song automatically has an inner hurdle to overcome. "Clint Eastwood" is such a song, because [livejournal.com profile] sisabet did an absolutely fantastic vid based on the Buffy episode Restless (but using the entire show for the developments of the four characters) a couple of years ago. And yet this vid about Gaius Baltar by [livejournal.com profile] bop_radar completely managed to overcome my viewer problem. It captures the comedy and the tragedy, the insane and oddly compelling journey of the BSG storyline I tend to call Life of Gaius throughout the show. (Gaius Baltar: least likely character to fall for - I mean, I loved Roslin right from the start, wasn't surprised to go from finding Six compelling to loving her, and given my thing for Albee-like relationships wasn't suprised to take to Tigh and Ellen, either, but I never expected Baltar to sneak up on me the way he did.)

Much train travel makes for a chance to catch up with tv recordings, oddly enough. So:

The Sarah Jane Adventures: The Last Sontaran )

Other shows watched: Life 2.01 (not sure about Dani Reese's new hair style, but I liked everything else) and House 5.03 (since I like Taub, I was thrilled he was the center of the subplot for once, and I also like the detective; I'm probably the only one who doesn't root for a House/Wilson reunion any time soon, though).

Lastly: I didn't write about Paul Newman, but read the many great entries with audience grief and affection: This one is my favourite.

Fanfic recs:

House:

Break: House between seasons 4 and 5. Acerbic words above on G.H. notwithstanding, he's a fascinating character, and this is a short but terrific exploration.

Sarah Connor Chronicles:

A Jack-Knifed Juggernaut (I am born again) : wonderful Cameron portrait, spoilers for 2.01. but none beyond. Of particular interest for Battlestar Galactica fans, as Cameron watches, among other things, Flesh and Bone in this story, but even if you're unfamiliar with the new BSG, you'll be swept away by the quality of writing. It's that most difficult thing, a Cameron pov which never forgets she is not human, and pulled off so well.

Cataclysm: do we have an Agent Ellison fic? Yes, we do! No spoilers for season 2, but for all of season 1. An excellent take on Ellison, contemplating all he's learned during the first season.
selenak: (BuffyDawn - Twinkledru)
One great thing about cons one can't attend: this particular one means a lot of vids in various fandoms get all at once.

Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes:

I bet you look good on the dance floor: Gene Hunt, Sam Tyler, Alex Drake, the 70s and the 80s, and that mixture of craziness (often in the fun sense) and angst both shows amply display. Given that the visual styles for each show are quite different (except in the "contemporary" i.e. 2006/2007/2008 scenes, which is noticable here), unique to the period and milieu in question - 70s working class Manchester versus 80s middle class London - which the vid makes a point of, the way it all jells into a cohesive whole is amazing. The great transition with the Cortina starting a drive and the Quattro ending it, the juxtaposition of Sam's and Alex's arcs, the suckerpunch of the last two images - I really loved this one.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

Scarlet Ribbons: the Slayers, all of them. Favourite detail: the way [livejournal.com profile] aycheb uses The Wish and Normal Again, both episodes that present an alternate version of Buffy, to show the parallels to Kendra and Dana respectively.

House:

Ghosts: I have issues with the s4 finale, which I haven't resolved for myself yet. Mostly because of spoilery things ) So I'm torn. And this vid brought everything up, bad and good, that I feel on this subject, in great visual style. Definitely worth watching, not in spite but because it makes you argue in your head.

Doctor Who:
On the other hand, sometimes you don't need arguments, you need hugs. If you need something to cheer yourself up: [livejournal.com profile] ariastar did a fabulous pic spam of (nearly) all of the great hugs in the Tenth Doctor's era, here. Just the thing to start a Sunday morning with!

Torchwood:

ETA: my absolute favourite just went up. [livejournal.com profile] andrastewhite posted A thousand suns - Jack and his team. The sheer ensembleness, the way these people at last connect and relate to each other, their humanity, good and bad - I love it.

Having just recently complained about the lack of Amber fanfiction, I'm happy to report I discovered a community devoted to her, no less, [livejournal.com profile] ctb_ftw. Here's a great ficlet about her competition with Thirteen early in the season; Amber in her überambitious cutthroat glory, and Thirteen playing enigmatic. I love it:

She comes in colours everywhere

Iron Man (movieverse):

Engine of Survival: Yinsen's story, as told by the superb [livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka (whom some of you might know from the BTVS or Harry Potter days of old).

Torchwood:

Seven Ages of Man : the ensemble, in short, sharp vignettes.

Doctor Who:

Snap: so much more than a missing scene between the very end of Forest of the Dead and scenes preceeding it, and a wonderful hurt/comfort story for Donna and the Doctor.

Lost:

Adieu: Alex and Danielle Rousseau. Most fanfic I've read about these two seemed to be based on the assumption there would be instant bonding and intimacy, but given the sixteen years apart, I've always found that unlikely. This look into Alex' head early in season 4 is entirely plausible, touching, and deftly written.

Natural Devolution: set pre-show, but has some season 2 spoilers: Noah Bennet and Sandra. Guest-starring Elle and Bob. This brings out the horror of what Noah did to Sandra and his own screwed-upness as few fanfics do.

House:

Interlude: Amber during the season 4 finale. A while ago I linked to a meta which made a convincing case for season 4 having been the season of Amber Volakis, but it's not exactly reflected in fanfiction. Here is a superb take on her.

Tomorrow: and this is House during and after the season finale, and Cuddy, and Wilson. If I have one complaint about s4, it's that there wasn't enough Cuddy, but again, we have fanfic. The House portrait is fantastic.

[livejournal.com profile] remixredux08 has opened, and the fanfiction goodness abounds. Some recs from various fandoms:

House

A Princeton Odyssey: someone had the genius idea to take a vignette about House and Wilson getting drunk and paying a visit to Cuddy and retell it in heroic couplets. Best thing ever. I'm still giggling, and in awe.

Cracked Pavement: House, Cuddy, Wilson, the angst version. Takes on the Tritter arc.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

What Friends Are For: Xander after Tabula Rasa in season 6. To say more would be spoiling the creepy and yet entirely plausible twist. I warned you!

Doctor Who

Lucid Diamond Sky: this is the remix of my own Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and paints a brilliant and utterly disturbing portrait of the Master, and his relationship with Lucy. Since part of the ficathon fun before the big reveal is to guess the authors, I'm going out on a limb and will say this was either written by [livejournal.com profile] kangeiko or [livejournal.com profile] iamsab. Whoever wrote it has mad writerly (and subversive, as it subverts my subversion) skills.

The Boy Who Killed Time: Doctor Who can excel in quiet horror, and this is one of those stories, as well as a heartbreaking portrait of the Doctor and various of his relationships. The encounter with Susan just about kills me.

Things Kept: Harriet Jones between Christmas Invasion and until after Last of the Time Lords. Yes indeed.

Harry Potter

Angled Between Wanton Drapes: the Black sisters, Narcissa, Bellatrix and in absence Andromeda. With my thing for messed up families, it was inevitable I would be intrigued by the Black clan in the later HP novels, and I'm glad it inspired so much fanfic.

Packing for the Crash: speaking of: this is Regulus, hands down my favourite Black.

Star Wars

Desert Glass: Obi-Wan stories between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope are a subgenre of their own, and this one is a great variation; the take on Obi-Wan's relationship with Qui-Gon, Anakin and the one he doesn't yet have with Luke is excellent.

1602

Dims Her Morning Fire: as I found Wanda in Neil Gaiman's Elizabethan AU very intriguing, I'm always happy to discover fanfic focusing on her. This one uses not one but two of Marvel's major X-men storylines in a wonderfully inventive way. I love it.

Here I was, idly scanning the nominations for the Heroes Slash Fanfiction Awards, recognizing a few stories I had read and enjoyed, seeing lots more I haven't read yet, when lo and behold, I spot my own name. This was something as a suprise, given I haven't written any Heroes slash stories (yet?), but as it turns out, some categories were not limited to the slash variety. So, whoever nominated Trioditis both for "Best Claire Characterisation in a Fic" and for "Best Other Female Characterisation in a Fic", and nominated Dreaming for "Best Molly Characterisation in a Fic", thank you! I'm very glad you liked those stories, and nominated them.

***

Meanwhile, I finished my House marathon (there will be a s4 post once I have the time of writing it), and did what one does when out of Vicodin more episodes to watch: I went on the hunt for fanfic.

Some early results:

What you need: great backstory on Cuddy and Wilson teaming up to get House back to work after the infarction. The voices of all three characters are spot-on, and it captures the transition from what we see in Three Stories to how we find things in the show pilot beautifully.

Sidekick showcases three s4 characters, Kutner, Amber and Thirteen after episode 9. It's great fun, and just like the actual show makes me hope we haven't seen the last of the character whom House didn't hire as I enjoy the hell out of that character, both on screen and in this story. (Sufficiently cryptic for people who haven't watched s4, I hope.)

Relative Distance is a story who picks up on something in Wilson's backstory and uses it in a way that showcases his friendship with House, with Chase very vividly written, too. Quietly touching.

A Dexter story I've been meaning to recommend for a while: Water through a rusted pipe: Deb and Dex after the s2 finale, and Deb makes a discovery. Or two. Pulls off the tricky balance of the emotions Dexter does and doesn't feel, and has a great Deb voice and reaction, too.
